Motherboard in question is ASUS M4A78T-E. Going to be pairing it with a Phenom II X4 955. Would I need to switch to DDR3 or would I be able to keep the DDR2 I have right now.

if you want DDR2, you can put that exact same phenom in an AM2+ mobo. (which can even run the same chipset as that asus mobo)

Negligible. Checkout my 955 overclocking adventure the difference between DDR2/3 is not enough to justify a new purchase (if you already have perfectly good existing DDR2) as you can see DDR2 performance is excellent even with bargain bin ram.

The Asrock A780GHX/128M will take an AM3 chip and DDR2 RAM. I know because I am typing on one right now. The specs for this board say AM2/2+, but my CPU disagrees.

i just got this Gigabyte for my 550 x2 that i am going to attempt to unlock to 4 cores
- it is DDR2; which chipset is this ?

i am guessing that there is not much difference if i ran with DDR3 over DDR2

Says right on the specs tab of your link the NB is 790X, SB is SB750.

Most AM2+ boards support AM3 CPUs.
