I had an average a64 3200+ 6800gt system... My dad's dell crapped out so I gave him mine for cheap, as its also a reason for me to put some money into a new system.

Should I wait for AM2 or just put together another 939 setup?

Or even go to 754 since that may last longer....

Ive been talking about upgrading for Total War later this year, but clearly Ill be upgrading sooner than expected...

If you're only deciding between AM2 and 939, I would go for 939. From what I've seen, AM2 offers very little over 939 (other than virtualization if you need that). Conroe would be noticeably faster than either, but you'd probably be waiting a few more months for that. It all depends on how soon you want to build, I suppose.

We would need a more specific time before you upgrade. I wouldn't buy a AM2 untill at least 2 months after then have been released. So you can see benchmarks on the final release. If AM2 turns out as bad as AnandTech makes it look on their previous articles on it, then you may have to stick with socket 939.

Stick with the 939. It has been solid and you better off with a proven source, than maybe's by AM2. All the hype on AM2 are just that. Socket 939 is recommended by ATers.

That's what I would do too. :).

If you're planning on ever upgrading this new machine with faster CPU's in the future, I think AM2, or Conroe would be a much better choice.

If on your next upgrade you're going to rip out the MB anyway, I'd just build a 939/754 rite now.

Agreed.

I've got two lists spec'd out right now, one for an AM2 system and one for a s939 based system.

Other than the mobo, cpu, and RAM, they are within 300 dollars of each other. I'd say that gives AM2 the edge because of its upgrade path.
