Im thinking about upgrading. Should I keep the 939 platform I have now, or should I go with AM2 and get some new memory ? If I stay with 939 Ill just buy a different motherboard and cpu. But I can upgrade to AM2 for the same price. But the memory would be extra. What should I do ? Rig in sig

If you already have a 939 board, why would you buy another? That would make no sense. You should keep your mobo and upgrade the CPU, if the latter's performance is bothering you.

If you have to buy a new mobo for some reason, go AM2. It'll give you more upgrade options in the future and you can Sell the Socket939 setup or pass it on to a family member/friend.

Well...it doesn't really make any sense to upgrade to AM2 from a 939 since there is almost no performance difference (except for support of DDR2)...

I think you could live for a few more months...

I'd keep what you have and upgrade the CPU. Before that I'd maybe see if you can overclock your existing chip a bit and save yourself some money...

What's your reason for upgrading? Just "the bug" or is an application or game lagging in performance?

As many have stated, when comparing sckt939 to AM2, like for like, there isn't much performance increase to speak of.

At your level, I don't think it's realistic to upgrade anything. Your motherboard is fine. Why would you upgrade it? Just get a dual core when the prices go down.

The reason for upgrading is because the fans on the I/O on this board...OTES I think they are, not sure. They were grinding like the bearing or something went bad, so I disabled them. And the post code never reads right, and tired of post codes anyway.

Bored with your old system? Then spend hours downloading vista beta 2. That'll keep you busy for awhile.

AM2 won't be such a bad deal cose AM2 will support 65nm K8l cpu's.
And who can resist those sweet lookin DFI boards.
If u are planning on an upgrade,do one of the following:-
1.Hold it off until core 2 duo comes out
2.Get AM2 as it'll have better upgrade paths.

Buy replacement chipset fan for your mobo for $10 and overclock your cpu. Cheapest upgrade with the best bang for the buck.

It isnt the chipset fan, it is the two little fans on the back where the inputs are for the I/O

Although those fans probably help with getting heat out of the case they ain't a must. Just make sure you have at least 1 fan bringing air in and 1 taking it out(not including the PSU). Continue using the board you got now and o/c that 3000+ untill more options become available in a month or so. Of course unless the board is giving you issues like locking up,not posting, ect and just isn't working right.

That would be the smart thing to do anyway.

If you're going to get a new mobo anyways, just go AM2. I hate "futureproofing" but in this case, the cost of getting a new AM2 mobo is minimal over getting another Socket 939 mobo, especially if you were thinking of upgrading to 2GB of RAM and a new CPU as well.
