Right now I'm on a regular AM2 motherboard and a X2 3800.

I noticed that the 6400's arn't on newegg or tigerdirect anymore.
I'd order here if I got one.

I was planning on waiting till around December for a cpu/gpu upgrade and still plan on doing so for the gpu.

But sense this is dissapearing...

Is this the best option for me or will there be something better within the next 5 months (compatible with AM2 motherboards)?

-don't plan on overclocking but it's a posibility

I had the same dilemma two weeks ago. But since 6000+ and 6400+ are quite pricey for the performance they give, I've spent a couple of dollars more and changed the whole platform, bought a e7200+P35 mobo, that give me more performance than any of those two AMD cpus , not to mention what performance I got after some overclocking.

As I see it, right now for an AM2 motherboard you can get the 5000+ BE and overclock it to 3,2-3,3 ghz and buy yourself some time until December. That's the best bang for the buck in AMD's camp right now.

I was in the same boat and I just decided to just go grab a $70 X2 5400+ that I spotted on Newegg. (from a X2 3800+). I did see the 6400+ but for $170 I'd rather just go to Fry's and pick up a mobo and cheap Intel processor and work my way with that. I'd rather spend a little more on the gpu.

yeah i cant disagree with you on this statement.

However he said he would do little to no overclocking.

Then i would go with what would work. Which is why i recomended the lower voltage cpu.

Yea I see it on newegg now, pretty sure it wasn't earlier.

Here's my motherboard.

I'm not going to switch over to Intel. I'm really satisfied with everything and having an extra motherboard and cpu doesn't seem very appealing right now.

I just want more speed.

Is this it?
As in will there never be anything faster (at default speeds)?

Or should I be considering the quad-cores?

Read my sig.

Im playing with a 9850BE right now. Its not bad. Of course my other 2 girls would probably haze it worse then a drinking frat would do to pledges, however if you take all of them not overclocked, the phenom isnt that bad.

Only problem is there uber picky with boards. So becareful.

What exactly am I looking for in your sig?
I see the water cooling guide and some specs.

That's cool the Phenoms are decent, they still bugged though?

One thing that's worth noting is Crysis runs a good bit better on the X2 6400 than the Phenoms and that's the main game I'm going for.

Will the X2 6400 ever be topped? Still wondering, guessing not sense they're on Phenoms now.
And whens the next line of Phenoms coming?

I havn't had much time to keep up with this stuff lately.

Get the 4850e linked above. You can overclock it easily to 2.9GHz with minor increases in voltage. The extra premium for the 6000 series processors is not worth it at all, especially considering the heat output and power consumption.

However, even at stock speeds it will run Crysis fine. I had a 4850 until April running at 3.0GHz.

I have the 4850E on a Gigabyte 780G uATX MB. Its running with at 3.0 Gig, using a 240 Meg FSB. Its running very stable and cool. The 4850E has not been out long so will probably be around longer than the 6400. I gave details of the overclock I did in the following post:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=28&threadid=2190905

I'm in the UK and none of the suppliers here list the 5000 BE anymore, they show it as discontinued. I do not know what the situation is with these processors in the US. Toms hardware did a review on the 5000 BE. Please see:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/...tion,review-29679.html

The 5000 BE would be a better bet for overclocking as it has an unlocked multplier. As far as I know the 5000 BE does not come with a heatsink.

Rob.

ErinYes, = AMD Spider

AMD Spider:
Phenom Class CPU <-- my case im running a 9850BE
AMD 790FX Board <--- ASUS M3A-MVP DLX/WiFi
HD3870's x 2 <-- took apart persephone's gpu temporary to play with spider.

That is a spider platform. :p So i was trying to show you, ive played with phenoms. Stick with the dualcore unless you really need quadcore. AMD quads just arent up to scale. :T

My recomendation still goes with 4850e. As i said its a dayam cool running chip, and it draws piss to nothing power. That would actually be an upgrade for ya, cuz the 3800+ should do near what the 5000+ should show almost no difference since they both should overclock simular, unless you got a really good chip for one and really bad chip for the other.

If you check the link I gave you'll see that I used a HSF from a S939 CPU with a TDP of 89W. The older HSF was much more substantial than the one with the 4850E. As I already had it and its the same fitment I used it. Running at 3.0 Gig on 1.3 V core voltage and Prime 95 running on both cores I get 41 - 42 C with a room temp of 22 - 24 C.
