According to several sources from Taiwanese mainboard and chipset manufacturers, AMD may launch AM2 before 6/6/6. Reason may be the usual AMD tactics to steal Intels show when giving the further Conroe preview suspected to happen May 23rd.
We will see... ;)
To those who are capable of german, here the source.

Unless they have the scam of the decade and gave everyone incomplete samples...I dont see what they are going to "steal".....It looks like a sideways upgrade for any current user and hardly any need for fanfare...

Quad core opterons?? then yes...

AM2 with often times slower DDR2 memory then current DDR...I would do this with as low of fanfare as I can get....

"AM2-Prozessorfassung" Hehe...

This is fairly intruiging, but unless their prices are phenominal it will offer very little in the way of upgrading. Still, it does make me want to wait to see what exactly happens with the cpu market and I'm certainly open to a really good deal.

When are the lower power cpu's coming out? They might be extreme for overclocking, and I know most of us would probably cream out pants if we could hit ~3.4GHz on air on the crazily undervolted processors...

Yeah thats what i thought low TDP chips (Turions) = low leakage transistors. A chip fabbed on low leakage transistors much like the current Turions will only OC as far as they can on stock voltage, anymore voltage won't yield much effect. Thus impeding the OC, plus high leakage transistors have the ability to switch faster thus reaching a faster frequency, even if high heat output is a by-product.

See I?m thinking that this ?30W TDP AM2 3800+? that everyone thinks will OC quite well, will in fact not, due to the fact they will be using low leakage transistors (I assume).

Thoughts?

lower power doesn't have any relation to overclocking margin.

as for turions, sure they have more LL, but considering their frequency target is much lower, the oc margin (percentage) is probably just as good as the desktop parts.

from what I hear the release of am2 is going to be nothing more than amd shooting themself in the foot

What I'm waiting for is AMD releasing cheap Semprons for AM2.

If anything's going to force AMD to lower prices, it'll be Conroe and Merom, but only if Intel releases those chips at the prices they've already advertised.

AMD brings AM2-Prozessoren...

I don't really care about AM2. I imagine that eventually it will scale higher for OCing, maybe even right away, but it's not enough.

The RAM AT's been testing with doesn't even really exist in retails channels, & likely won't show up in Canaduh till late summer.
When it does, it'll cost a freakin' fortune.

Which means you buy value/mid level DDR2 RAM that's actually slower than s939...so no thanx.

Conroe will more than likely be in my box by autumn (if i can buy it by then)...

AMDs 2G chips have a TDP of 35W, and the 2.8G chip is at 125W, I'd have to say that there is more difference than just volts going on there. Plus AMD talked about tweaking their 90nm process to allow them to make the 35W X2s, so I think its entirely reasonable to assume that they are using low leakage transistors like Turion. The clockspeed of the 35W X2s doesn't exceed that of the Turions, so I don't see why it would not be the case that they are using a different process then the high performance chips.

6/6/6? What an evil date.

Most likely they're the same as the turions, which were worse for overclocking. Slower transistors for lower power, but also lower max clock speed.
The only reason the Athlon XP-Ms did so well is because they were binned chips using AMD's highest quality silicon. It was basically the equivalent of getting an Athlon FX chip.

I think they will be early... I'll have an X2 5000+ either today or tomorrow if the USPS does thier thing. It's an OEM though, don't know when the retail will be available.

Really not much to elaborate on. My cpu guy just told me he sent me a new AM2 5000+, an FX60, and a Conroe ES. He mailed them Tues, so I'm just waiting on them to arrive (just checked the mail and they didn't come today). The AMD's are OEM system cpu's, his company has had them for a while now and have systems built with them now. I imagine the system builders get them before they go retail. I don't run AMD so I'll just sell those cpu's for him and keep the Conroe ;)

Nice...you got a mobo for that Conroe?

No.. I dont' have a board for the Conroe yet. Not much out threre right now other than the Intel D975XBX which has support for Conroe with rev. 304. Asus is saying they will release a bios update for the P5WD2-E boards to support Conroe.. but they aren't saying when. I just started playing with a 950es Presler a couple weeks ago so I'm in no hurry, I'll wait for something better than the Intel board to come out.
