Am I too paranoid for thinking school network is unsafe?! Thinking it is filled with packet sniffers and key loggers since network tecnicians said that it's possible... does anyone else fear this when using personal creditionals to log on a computer that does not belong to you such as a college computer lab computer?

Meh. I don't purchase anything on school computers or using our wireless. Not too scared about anything else.

Back in high school I ordered something on a school computer and a teacher kind of laughed at me and said "you just gave your credit card number to about ten people". Apparently our school logged everything.

when i was on campus i felt pretty safe...i dont think you have to worry. Most colleges are at the point where they lock you out if you have any viruses, and they dont have enough man power to watch what you do...meaning its usually virus free and no one is watching.

one of our campuses is a bad seed though...computers are practically UNUSABLE due to spyware. HD's are shredded from the constant writing

I remember that there was this guy looking at porn sites while in a "computer science" class. My friend and I played a UT demo during the entire class. When I saw his screen, he looked at me and smiled. I nodded my head..

On my campus the teachers bitch and moan about the security of the computers that IT lowers the security to get the teachers off their backs so it is very possible to install a keylogger and packet sniffer on the network with no one knowing... so how do I prevent such things from getting my information. The only thing I can think is get a VPN service of a piece of software on a usb stick such as Roboform. What do you all think?

technically you'd need to boot into a controlled operating system, assuming that the bios or some other non-volatile memory isn't compromised...

I'd never enter any sensitive data at a public terminal.

If it's your own computer, and you're worried about the network, just make sure you do anything important over SSL. Or just everything over SSL.

Let's put it this way....

Your school network is there to protect you just as much as it is there to protect their network. SSL tunneling is watched and it is flagged in any decently equipped campus network. Don't do anything stupid and there is no need to be concerned. Just to freak you out - all IM stuff is logged incase there is an investigation. Don't be stupid, it is their network.

This reminds me of when I thought sorting the dictionary backwards 1000 times in the background on the VAX would be "funny".

-edit-
No network is "safe". It's the level of acceptible risk that you are willing to take.

I suddenly think you're a whole lot funnier than I previously thought.

I'm not worried when I'm on the wired network (in my room) but I wouldn't order stuff through the wireless as it is unencrypted (just need to log into a web page to use the wireless). Plus, I don't really have the option to go somewhere else, so what am I going to do?
