Am I the world's most unlucky guy?

Or does MB quality control just suck.

So the job I thought I had went south and I couldn't afford the Sandy Bridge system I thought I'd get someone else to build for me. Sigh.

But then I gathered myself up and realized that I didn't need new HDs or a new case (Antec Sonata I). I could build myself a nice AMD Phenom II BE pc with a new MB, memory and PSU. All I do is multi-task like a demon (downloading, decoding, encoding, playing back HD video, surfing - never a game) so the SB platform was probably overkill (coming from P4 2.8 Northwood, 7600GS, Asus p4p800e).

So I decided to build with:

Phenom II 555
Corsair cx430 v2
Crucial 2x2 1333
AMD IGP, either 880g or 890gx

That's when the heartaches begin (holding Newegg totally non-accountable in this nightmare) (all results from breadboarding):

1) Not being hip to black sockets at the time, I order ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3. First board screams about not finding any memory whether there is memory installed or not. CPU fan spins, no video, no post.

2) Replace Asus board, keep PSU and CPU. CPU fan spins and nothing . . . No beeps, no video.

3) RMA Asus board and order ASRock 890GX PRO3. I'm cool with this. A little less $, a slightly better NB, some sexy features, great reviews on Newegg. Breadboard it and again no video, beeps, CPU fan spins, etc.

4) RMA PSU and CPU, keep Asrock MB. Install new parts. No video, beeps, display on Dr. Debug LED.

So to sum up, I cannot post with 3 different MBs, 2 different pairs of RAM, 2 PSUs, 2 CPUs.

24 pin and 8 pin connector have been repeatedly reseated. Display works with the Google Chrome CR-48 I'm writing this on. CMOS has been reset multiple times with each configuration. CPU fan always spins. Never a sound out of correctly wired chassis speaker except for first hysterical alarm about no memory (back 3 MBs ago). MBs never installed in case, so shorts unlikely.

WTF is going on here. I have not gone without a *real* pc for 20 years. Do I have to have AVAdirect build something for me?

I`d send all that crap back and start over completely... That just plain sucks... To tell the truth you can buy good used stuff on here from good traders that for sure works and get it cheaper too...

But if you just want new and understand that may be the case then Newegg and others offer good deals on setups like what you are trying to build and can have them assembled and tested before shipping...

PM to you as well...

Ya, that's why I have always went to one of my favorite computer stores (eg, MicroCity), hand them the list of parts I want for the system and pay an extra $50 for them to assemble & test the MB and hand it to me.

The big thing about this is THAT THE SHOPS KNOW WHICH COMPONENTS WORK TOGETHER. They have the resources to have investigated what works & what doesnt and as such they will often make a recommendation to use a different brand in the component mix or if you want to stay with the specified components (memory, CPU, Video) then a different MB might be recommended.

Some people love the hassle though & wouldnt want it any other way.

My best mate had a similar issue not 4 months ago. When it's like this you are looking at two problem components at least.

Strip it to the bare minimums, stop using both RAM sticks same time incase one of them is messing it up. Make sure you haven't flicked a bios switch (especially those easy ones that can be used to reset the bios after an overclock or something)...I know you've probably been through all of this but chances are you are missing something still + you have 2+ dodgy components and just havent tried out the combination that actually works yet.

FYI he had a psu which wrecked itself and took out a mobo and a stick of RAM. The weird thing was they worked (booted) with other components but were very unstable and crashed soon after booting.

I don't know what to say other than the odds of getting all those defective parts are slim.

Try a basic build on top of the mb box or something with just the mb, cpu, and a stick of memory.

It's possible your shorting your mb's to the case. Did you make sure you removed any xtra standoffs from the mb tray? Maybe your old mb needed one that the new ones don't and it's shorting out.

man i remember my asus p4p motherboard i was using it till almost 2007 such a great motherboard i overclocked my pentium 4 2.4 chip to 3.4ghzs which i guess for the cpu i had was almost impossible for most it came out of a dell dimension 2400 system im sure if the computer stores had a couple old extreme cpus sitting around and sold me one,i would have used it for another year ,but they kept pushing core 2 duo down my throat,so i finally saved my nickels and dimes and bought my first core 2,what memories that e4500 blew me away:p
