I read that book when I was a teenager and completely misinterpreted it. I thought it was a defence of rationalism later in life found out it was just the opposite.

That's a great book. But most teenagers that read it hate it. They find it depressing. I seriously think it's a mistake to subject kids to great literature because they'll just be turned off to it and never try reading it when they're older.

Its about a guy who thinks he is above the moral laws, he is insane and the book tells the story of him and his insanity

I had to read so many books in high school that I have no idea if I've read this or not...I think I have though.

He is only insane because you don't think he is above the moral laws. If you accept that proposition that he really is above it all, think on that. Recommended companion reading was the Ubermensch writings by Nietzsche.
