yes because so many high-end consumer sound cards were available in 2001.

An SB Live Platinum was a high-end consumer sound card in 2001.

They didn't say consumer high end, they said high end, I'm pretty sure there are other audio hardware companies that produce sound cards much higher end than the SB Live... Anyways I was trying to emphasize the fact that they were using Sony Headphones more than anything else...

The article was written in 2001.. that was before all the Sony hate.
Too bad considering that looking back, sony has been making sub par products for quite some time. The only device I have that has been working flawlessly since the day I bought it is my Sony Portable 900mhz phone from 1998.

What's wrong with Sony headphones?

PC World is a magazine for consumers, not professionals, so I don't think anyone is going to mistake what they meant by high-end.

Sony can range from crap to pretty good. A pair of Grado's or Sennheiser would have been better. Something like the Grado SR-80 (or 60) or the Sennheiser HD280 if they weren't going to use a headphone amp.

Anyway, people probably don't hear a different between something about 256 kbps and lossless unless they actually spent a little money on headphones. Overall, 256 kbps or even 192 kbps isn't bad while listening in a portable setting.
