Am I the only one who thinks that stand-alone MP3 players are sort of a waste?

I can understand a niche market for something like the Nano or something really small.

It seems like a PDA/phone might be a much better investment. Organizer, phone, entertainment, email, web browser, etc...

Are there any all-in-one PDA phones? or am I just making sh!t up?

Well it all depends on how you use it?

I use mine while working out and also in the car. To me it's a priceless investment because I listen to music any chance I get. I've got a 3rd gen 20GB still going strong with no problems... I've had it 2 years now and it's still on the original battery too...

Do you have a cell phone?

I just think it would be better to have all your portable devices rolled up into one small package.

If it could be small enough AND have enough storage space, then yes, it'd be nice. But for now I'll take my 512MB muvo into the gym and leave my phone in the car.

A standalone makes sense if you exercise or do anything that might break it. Then a cheap one makes sense. You bust it and buy a new one. :)

I'd hate to have to upgrade an expensive item just to improve/upgrade 1 portion of it. Most of the all-in-one products don't do their tasks that well anyways.

In fact, I want the camera option OFF the phones.

In American Culture, no theres no use for it. It's very popular in Korea/Japan where people are always on foot/city transits.

When I was in Korea my cousin almost desperatly wanted to buy me a MP3 player. I was like why do I need that for? Instead he bought me some nice Sennheiser Headphones

So what happens when you run down the battery on your phone listening to mp3s and then can't make any calls?

Phones require subscription services, MP3 players don't. I don't see the point in the race to be the smallest player. I'd rather see a USB port on the front of home and car stereos where I could plug in a hardrive that held all the music.

I don't listen to enough music to make it worth buying an MP3 player, but I bought a 512MB miniSD card for my Motorola MPx220 phone that lets me carry as much music and photos and video with me as I want.

I find it annoying to carry a PDA and a phone. If I had the cash, I'd buy the HP 6515 PDA/phone combo w/GPS and have everything I could want.

I have a Treo, Laptop and an Ipod.

They all do something well. I dont mind carrying multiple devices if they serve their purpose well.

I have a cell phone, PDA, and MP3 player along with a PSP, GPS receiver, portable XM radio, and a ultralight laptop. Yes, my briefcase does get heavy.

The problem with AIO's is that they don't do any function well. Jack of all trades, master of none. Cell phones that double as PDA's and MP3's stink. PDA's as cell phones also suck. I'm not necessarily wiling to compromise functionality or usability just so I can carry one less thing, especially when I have a nice briefcase that organizes everything very well.

I plan on buying the Motorola V8 RAZR when it comes out and using it for an mp3 player. As flash media becomes more and more smaller, you will see more phones becoming sole MP3 players

I carry a blackberry which fulfills my phone, pda, email needs and I have a 1Gb muvo. Since I'm not the one to fidget with the mp3 player every minute, it's not a big deal for me.

The Treo is perfectly suitable in every way other than not having the same capacity. So if you have gigs and gigs of music and don't want to carry around multiple SD cards, then get your Ipod as another device. I personally just want to carry 1 object max for everything.

i agree with the OP, i bought a pda instead of an mp3 player, now i got a cellphone that plays mp3's as well so i knew a standalone mp3 player would not help much, i dont need 5,000 songs, its not like im going to travel the world with the mp3 player.
