Am I the only one who thinks Jazz music sucks?

My first guitar teacher was a Jazz guitarist. He was such a wanker. He would put down rock and blues for being "unstructured." Isn't the the point of having soul in music is to just play it from the heart?

It seems to me that the only people who like Jazz are Jazz musicians. To me it sounds like every song is just a big wank-fest to see who can make the most technically complicated sound, but it rarely sounds good. Give me a good old simple I-IV-V-I progression and some soul.

If you are a Jazz-freak, I am not trying to flame, just expressing my opinion.

You obviously lack the musical sophistication to appreciate the finer points of jazz. Jazz is one of the few true forms of music, classical being the other. You should really check out Miles Davis - Kind of Blue and tell me that you don't like jazz.

I would agree that some jazz is a strokefest. But good jazz is transcendant, and you really shouldn't generalize...

You just reenforced every reason why I hate Jazz. You should not need "sophistication" to enjoy music. Even classical has soul to it. Jazz seems purely technical to me.

It's an acquired taste.

IIRC, Rock and Blues were spawned from Jazz. [edit] Thanks for confirmation below [/edit].

There's always Kenny G if you don't like the hard stuff. ;)

There are lots of types of music, some are very simple, some are more complex. It's not just genre based, there are some complex rock songs while there are simple classical or jazz songs. The more simple ones are easier to apreciate while the more complex ones take some time. I'm not going to say which type of music is better, I really couldn't, I love it all, but I can say that jazz is great:cool:
I don't know what you are talking about with jazz not having any soul, maybe you don't feel it because you don't like it/understand it.
In every genre there is bad music, so I'm not trying to say that all jazz is god, but on the whole the genre rocks.

No you're not the only one. Aside from the irritating pretentiousness of the genre, I just don't like the sound of the instrumental arrangements used, as well as the lack of structured melodies, rhythm, etc.

I really like smooth jazz.. very relaxing to listen to towards the end of the day. It's not something to listen to all the time, but it's nice once in a while.

i think your teacher is a wanker for ruining you on jazz, most jazz is unstructured, the best times i had playing music was when i was improving with others in my jazz class. each one of us would just take 20 or so measures to lay down what ever we felt like, it got interesting when we tried to work our melodies in with each others. it was really fun an there was hardly any structure to it.

You've apparently never been to and never have experienced REAL Jazz and certainly have never been to New Orleans.

Poor Soul :(

I was in my high school's jazz band for two years, and it was tons of fun.

Oh, and I was a French Horn player too. That was interesting! :p I read & transposed the 2nd Alto Sax part. Good times....
