Am I the only one who kind of regrets my iphone3g purchase?

I've always marvelled at the iphone. It is sleek, awesome looking, can play cool games, has loads of memory, etc..

Once I heard the next iteration will come with 3g and priced favorably, I wanted one.
I was hoping I can do a jailbreak since most of my gripes about the phone is solved with the non-itunes apps.

Well, now that I have it, here are my complaints:

First, stuff that hopefully can be remedied by future apps:
No terminal, no ssh client, no text editor, no pdf viewer, no ODS/document viewer/editor, terrible program organization, I hate the icons management, BT/3g/wifi/screenbrightness can't be accessed directly (takes multiple steps), takes multiple steps to make a damn phone call, no standard voice dialer (WTF?!..and the voicedialer app in itunes doesn't count, that's not a true voice dialer since it doesn't make use of the BT's voice-dialer button), only safari+calculator+youtube can be tilted, can't view redtube (youpr0n's mobile site kinda blows), no way to continue to run certain programs when you "home" out of it.

Stuff that will not be remedied:
itunes took over my computer, itunes suck, itunes uses too many processes to even run with the iphone, you can't drag/drop any filetype, lack of flash support, no stylus+handwriting recognition, calander is a bit of a joke (not comprehensive), i phokking hate itunes, itunes suck, and itunes invaded my computer. Ringtone implementation sucks though (although I use audacity+convert-to-acc+rename-to-m4r works).

<^> apple.

Cultural stuff that I dislike:
Justin Long...enough said (i don't like the character; the actor himself is ok and I have nothing personal against him. It's just the character portrayal I dislike).

There's, of course, many good things about it. I do like the implementation of the contacts and email. Games are awesome. google maps w/ gps is very nice. The Pandora and AOL radio is friggin GODSENT (best iphone media apps). The entire implementation of contacts/addresses/maps/etc is very nice. Stuffing about 13 gigs of my fav. music is nice too. Itunes at least makes it easy to rip my cd's and such.
Oh, and it looks nice...

Oh well, I wish I could've waited for a nice qwerty phones that are coming out w/ windows mobile. Google's OS is coming out, and I heard there will be linux-based phones.

Bleh.

EDIT: sigh, I just noticed that this thread is useless because most of the things I've mentioned have been mentioned in some of the threads I just read in this forum. To save any trouble, just lock it, and I will take this discussion to the other thread. Sorry mods..

I've had it since Friday and only had about 5 minutes in front of my PC to put music on it. Lets just say I didn't get any music on it. iTunes is fucking ridiculously retarded. Why can't I just select individual songs to transfer to my phone? I honestly don't want to learn iTunes but I suppose I'll have to.

Another annoying thing that I've noticed is that the onscreen keyboard seems to 'lag' at times and screws up my typing.

Also when I press the home button to bring it out of standby it will take me to a random app like ipod or contacts when I know for sure i didnt leave it at those apps last time I used the phone.

I suppose I don't really regret my purchase, but 2 years is a long time :\

I don't think this thread is redundant - your complaints are about the 3G iPhone and this is the first thread I've seen by 3G iPhone owners complaining about features that are missing.

Once the jailbreak hack is released for the 3G iPhone a lot of the listed complaints will be resolved by the 3rd party installer: I have SSH to my iPhone, I have a terminal, I have a text editor (vi) and can view processes ("top" and "pf -fe" and resources, I have the ability to transfer files onto and off of my iPhone without iTunes.

And all the 3G iPhone owners will have all of these too... some day when the 3G iPhone is jailbroken.

Also, you can dial someone fairly quickly. Set your home-button double-click to bring up favorite contacts. Then it's a double-click and then press who you want to call. It's still one more step than one might like, but it's pretty fast.

If you can't learn how to use iTunes in 5 minutes you should give up computing. Seriously, it's THAT EASY.

My 7 year old cousin can transfer songs to his little ipod Shuffle. My 84 year old grandma can transfer songs to her ipod.

:( hey! haha I only figured it out after like an hour or so of screwing around with it. I'm soo used to the common methodology of transfering files. Itunes' interface definitely does it differently, so that screwed with my head. I was offended that I couldn't figure it out right out of the box. :(

And thanks for that double-click of the home button suggestion pm! I really can't wait for the jailbreak to come out.

At least using iTunes is 100x easier than using the Zune software. In the Zune software you have to make a playlist, then browse your library by artist > album > title and drag the song to the playlist icon. Then you have to sync the playlist from the playlist menu. However, if you move a song's location on your HDD the Zune software can't find it and when you sync again, that song is no longer on your Zune device and you have to locate it all over again. Talk about a headache.

At least with iTunes, once it's on your iPod or iPhone, it doesn't get deleted or removed automatically.

WTF is the big problem with iTunes?

You simply connect your iPod or iPhone. It appears in iTunes. You select the files you want and drag them to your iPod or iPhone. What for the files to transfer. Disconnect your device and you are good to go...it can't get any easier...

WTF:confused:

Yea...the only thing I can think of it if one has it to manage your updates for you and you don't get a choice of which songs you want transferred, but that is easily turned off. Unfortunately, I don't have an iPhone, but I can't imagine using that with iTunes is any harder than an iPod, which even my mom can do.

Dragging files doesn't work for me. It shows a little X and wont transfer anything.

edit: figured it out, itunes still blows though

I'm with the people who don't like iTunes and iPhones... :) How exactly do you drag songs over? I have to go to file and choose "create new playlist", then find my songs, and drag them and put them in playlists, and then click on my iPhone icon and click the music tab and choose to sync those playlists by checking the box. I presume if 84-year olds can do it, then there has to be an easier way... how do I do it the easier way? If I drag them over, it seems to ignore it.

And, yes, I am able to configure an Asterisk Linux VOIP server, I know how to set up a secure firewall in Linux using ipchains, and I can do any number of fairly complex Unix things... maybe Apple designed it to be so easy that those of us who are command-line junkies can't figure it out.

IIRC iTurnes isn't configured for manual song selection by default. It has to be chosen in a settings menu and THEN you can drag and drop individual files.
