So my brother constantly tells me that I am basically the only person that does this
I basically reverse my direction buttons in any 1st or 3rd person PC game
for example assuming the typical W,S,A,D controls where W is forward, S is backwards, A is left, and D is right i reverse A and D, so when I press A I turn to the right and D turns me to the left

it seems totally natural for me, my brother just thinks I?m crazy

We both play WoW for example and whenever I?m playing on one of his chars i simply cant do it unless I change the controls

Anyone else do this or an I truly strange

Come to think of it I do it for some PS2 games also (Ratchet and Clank) for example

No. But whenever I'm driving, I always use my right signal for left turns and my left signal for right turns. I dunno, just seems natural.

No, but in most games, A and D strafe, rather than turn. This sounds more like an inverted thumbstick kind of thing, if you ask me.

Never heard of it. I guess it makes sense in a strange sort of way, it's like inverting your mouse (something I have to do, doesn't feel right otherwise). But it wouldn't be the same for me since I prefer strafing to turning with S and F (esdf fo' life, suck it wasd foo's!).

It seems very strange to me... But the issue isn't whether it is strange, IMO, but is it efficient? I think the answer is no. Unless I misunderstand your post, it would be far more difficult to pull off strafing runs and what not do the awkward twisted finger position that would be required for it. Can ya do it? Absolutely, but not anywhere near as efficient as the standard WASD. But hey, skill can overcome odd dexterity anyday of the week... Some guitar players don't have the right picking technique, but can still out perform someone who has the right technique... But, yeah, again, to answer your question, it is VERY wierd.

Edit ** I gave this a little more thought and came up with the idea that if you could replace "W" as your forward motion with "Q" then you could use your ring finger and gain all that effiency back. You can then use "W" to 'lean' left and then "E" to 'lean right (in games where leaning is an option).

S and D are only "Turn" in WoW, i just used it for an example, they are set to straif in FPS games but i still have them inverted

its totally natural to me so i dont think its anymore difficult to pull off a straifing run or whatever, its just 2 keys swapped so its the same # of keys pressed

Wonder if you could bunny hop properly like that.

Those controls make 0 sense as strafe keys, and only a tiny bit of sense as turning keys. But only if you are logically thinking you are turning the camera and not the player. Which is an awful way to think about playing a game and would seem to ruin immersion.

I invert the mouse cos I got used to Elite where S was down and X was up. Thinking about it a bit more, if you pull the mouse or your head back, you're looking up, if you push the mouse or your head forwards, you're looking down.

Please tell me you only mean when driving in games. :Q

I never understood the WSAD keys being used. I always move them one key to the right so your at the 'home' keys (EDSF).

Bunny hop?

I think that?s it, I treat it like the camera, which is why I prob invert the camera in Ratchet and Clank, as it similar to WoW

I actually went through and checked most games I play
In WoW the camera rotation is swapped but strafe is normal

In most FPS games I use have inverted strafe and use the mouse to turn/look

Console FPS games I just invert Up/Down

I cant recall not doing this in games that I play, I have no idea why I started doing it either, however most of the games I do play regularly I am very good at, so it seems to work for me, no idea why, I guess my brain is wired backwards

Of the handful post I've seen created here and other places, I don't think I've seen your kind of setup. Mine is slightly different than what the normal setup people use.

Like ArchAngel777 said, it's what works for the individual best.

For Counter Strike: Source mine is:

Forward : Left Mouse Button
Strafe L/R : A & D
Back: S
Crouch: X
Jump: W
Fire: Right Mouse Button
Alt Fire: Space Bar
Silent Walk: Shift
Drop weapon: Q
Weapon selection: I use the numbers 1-5, so for flash it's 4,3. I believe.
Reload: R

As you can see, I move forward with the left mouse button, main fire is with the right mouse button. I just feel I can perform more moves, such as move forward, jump and change to a fully loaded pistol in hope to win a battle.

Erm I'm confused: "or example assuming the typical W,S,A,D controls where W is forward, S is backwards, S is left, and D is right i reverse A and D, so when I press S I turn to the right and D turns me to the left "

You mean you turns right by pressing A, and turn left by pressing D, that's what you mean right?

Am I the only one who uses the arrow keys for movement?

Up Arrow - Forward
Down Arrow - Backward
Left Arrow - Strafe Left
Right Arrow - Strafe Right
Right CTRL - Jump
NUM0 - Crouch
NUM1 - Reload
' - Grenade

Varies a little for each game, especially when the game offers a "lean" right/left, and prone.

Okay that's weird. But it wouldn't make a difference in strafing, or does it? You simply strafe the other way, just like you turn the other way. I guess if the mind is used to it, you could learn everything though. You could make W turn you left, and S turn you right, and A move you forward etc etc. Just gotta get used to it.

Get a FANG keypad -- then just set profiles up. You and your brother can swap in an instant.

After I got my FANG I won't touch a keyboard to play any games other than to type "haha I killed j00 n00b!!!111!!"

:)

That would be me. Ever since Jedi Knight forced me to use that, it's a must for me.

Doing that forces you to sit off-center from your keyboard and monitor.

Not really, I just have room on my desk to spread them out a bit.

I agree with you completely... I use EDSF as well. I think this gives you more key options in addition to be able to find your hand placement on the keyboard without looking at the keyboard since you can feel that bump on the F key. People think I'm weird for doing that even though they agree that it does give you access to more keys.
