Am I the only one that can't stand hatchbacks?

I just don't see it. Don't get me wrong - the utility is great when it's needed, and the performance you get with some of them is nice, but I'd much prefer to have that same performance in a regular old coupe or even a sedan. Even when I was car shopping and considered a Focus coupe /sedan or Mazda 3 sedan, the sales people insisted that I sit in a couple of hatchbacks to see how I'd like it. It wasn't so much that they suggested it that bugged me, it was the fact that the'd look at me, and get a puzzled look as if they were thinking "Hey, this guy's in his early 20s, he should LOVE hatchbacks. What's wrong here?!"

Since I'm curious, let's see what the general consensus is on hatchbacks. Please strictly base this on a looks / utility perspective, not based on specific cars. For example, imaging if you could get your WRX, MazdaSpeed3, etc. as a 2-door instead of a hatchback. Also, in regards to the poll, please don't base your answer on unrealistic circumstances. Believe me, if I had all the money in the world and the fastest, safest, and most fuel efficient car ever made was a hatchback, I'd buy it too.

Hatches are pretty practical, though I think in areas where crime is bad it might be a slight negative (harder to hide what would otherwise be in the trunk). Overall I am not a big fan of them though, I prefer a nice-looking sedan or coupe when possible. I'd consider a hatch over an SUV though, as I don't really have a need for an SUV.

The Focus community seemed to shit a brick that the current-gen wouldn't be available in hatch, but sales are *very* high (I guess just to a slightly different demographic).

One thing I've noticed : hatches seem to be most popular with really young folks. I just feel like a bit of a dork when driving or riding in one.

The only hatchback I genuinely like is the VW GTI. I could live with a Mazdaspeed3 but don't love it.

Hatchbacks are way useful.

I own a Matrix and a Tacoma. The hatch can carry almost the same amount of shit as the truck by volume, if not by weight. They're superbly useful.

depends in style. the 1st gen probe looked nice, the Tesla model s is nice looking and that's a hatchback. Toyota matrix i don't care for.

Depends on your needs, I have a Focus Coupe, and I've never needed to carry anything that wouldn't fit in the trunk. In my case, the extra space in the hatch would be useless to me. I have a brother with a Titan and a trailer in case I need to move something seriously large, like a Queen sized bed, sectional sofa, etc, which won't fit in a hatch anyway.

The utility of a wagon without having one. Had a 98 Honda Civic hatchback once - was an alright econo-car but I felt that I wasn't getting much for the money.

did the zx3/5 hatches really sell poorly? seems i they're everwhere, so i don't really believe so. but ford chose to kill the hatch. the focus coupe that replaced them is not exactly the pretties car on the road.

is there really a difference between hatches, which don't particularly sell well, and some of these cute utes like the nissan rogue?

This.

I think hatches look better than their sedan counterparts, frankly. Most times the lines just flow better on a hatch or wagon than a sedan.

Depends on how many cars I'm allowed to have, I wouldn't buy a coupe as my only car.

For the record I have 2 wagons and a coupe, and my partner has a 2door hatchback.

I regularly carry two mountain bikes, two full backpacks and other items in mine (after folding the rear seats down).

I fit one of these inside one of these, fully assembled, with the hatch shut.

On another occasion, I fit a full size 5-drawer dresser in it with the hatch bungeed down. Try doing either of those with any car that has a trunk.

A hatchback is not a make-or-break thing with me. For the record, I own the one hatch, and three coupes with trunks. The hatch is by far the most useful.

I love the hatchback. Give me a Subaru WRX & Mazdaspeed 3 hatchback and i'll be happy. They're very useful when you need to haul a lot of stuff and at the same time fun to drive.

After seeing this, I realize I've mis-worded this post. I don't dislike hatchbacks because of the hatch; I dislike hatchbacks that have a raised "roof line" in the back, where the trunk would be. Like this, this and this. I much prefer this.

I bought an 06 Mazda 3s sedan new. Love the car, think it looks great, but I wish I had gotten the hatchback. Of course I wish I could have gotten a speed 3, but even a regular would be nice. There are many times when I wish I had more room. While I do think the sedan looks better, I think the hatch looks damn good and more than makes up for the difference with utility.

I would prefer a hatch over non in a smaller car. The utility is just so much better than a mini sedan.
