I just don't see it. Don't get me wrong - the utility is great when it's needed, and the performance you get with some of them is nice, but I'd much prefer to have that same performance in a regular old coupe or even a sedan. Even when I was car shopping and considered a Focus coupe /sedan or Mazda 3 sedan, the sales people insisted that I sit in a couple of hatchbacks to see how I'd like it. It wasn't so much that they suggested it that bugged me, it was the fact that the'd look at me, and get a puzzled look as if they were thinking "Hey, this guy's in his early 20s, he should LOVE hatchbacks. What's wrong here?!"
Since I'm curious, let's see what the general consensus is on hatchbacks. Please strictly base this on a looks / utility perspective, not based on specific cars. For example, imaging if you could get your WRX, MazdaSpeed3, etc. as a 2-door instead of a hatchback. Also, in regards to the poll, please don't base your answer on unrealistic circumstances. Believe me, if I had all the money in the world and the fastest, safest, and most fuel efficient car ever made was a hatchback, I'd buy it too.
