Am I the only one here that likes the new iMac?

I, for one, am tired of PC's constantly getting less efficient in the heat output department. This leads to larger cases and more cooling (more of a foot print & noise!.

Coupled with the fact that the new iMac will come w/ OSX and is pretty affordable, it doesn't seem like that bad of a computer purchase.
Sure it only has a GF2MX, heck, I'm pretty much done with computer games (unless of course, Starcraft 2 comes out ;)

Plus having a super drive would be schweet ;)

I guess that as a tweaker (as many of us AT'ers are), it just strikes a nerve. And you may be a tweaker, for all I know. I can't speak for everyone here. I only speak for myself.

For me, the fun isn't just in getting and having a new computer. It's also trying to maximize every bit of performance out of the system, changing in and out system parts, etc. The iMac doesn't seem very condusive to that.

I don't tweak much anymore and I still think it's an ugly POS. To each their own.

It's features and ease of use are nice, but it looks way too much like my desk lamp with an LCD stuck on the end. :)

Call me dumb, but I believe that's the beauty of it! I always think PC's (and previous macs too!) stuck out like sore thumbs in a room. The iMac sorta "blends in." Very 21st century-esque ;)

Buy one and give it to me.

<< I liked the G4 cube better. >>

I liked the cube too. I wanted a bunch of them. They could make a neat little wall in my room.

Geez, with everyones attitudes I'm surprised PCs have come this far. A little innovation never hurt anyone.

Show me a PC thats that small, and that quiet.

It looks (and I emphasize "looks") like it's not very sturdy. In other words, it looks like it could easily fall over.

Can't say that I'm that fond of it. Quite frankly, if the thing had a huge performance edge over a PC I wouldn't care if it looked like a john deer tractor. But, despite the trendy newvo design, it's price performance isn't as good as a PC in my opinion. Besides, the last time I was forced to use G4's they crashed ALL THE TIME!! Not to mention the fact that I don't think they are all that easy to use. And when it comes to raw number crunching, I have seen PC's of equal "power" smoke a mac.

I like the new iMac design as well.

As far as tweaking computer, here is point of view on that. Tweaking computers is fun, but only when you have enough time to do that. I have a job now which pays me more and I can actually buy pretty much anything I want for my PC, so it is not worth the time spending many hours just to get 50 more MHz out of my CPU when I can work for 10 minutes and buy the next generation CPU with less effort :)

Yes, you're the ONLY one. I flipped over to Tech TV while I was at my parents place earlier tonight and my dad laughed at it. Personally I'd never buy one and if I were given one it would be up on E-bay with a quickness. After working the PC repair biz for several years, mainly laptops, I can't wait to hear all the horror stories about how Johnny broke the arm holding the LCD or how many people break the LCD panel on that thing. I give Apple props for thinking different, but I'll stick with my PC's.

The GX towers are sexy with a nice flow to them, the new imac looks like someone just connected a gumdrop, rod, and rectangle in autocad

I also dont like the 2001/StormTrooper color scheme the latest stuff uses

A heatsink alone is insufficient to cool modern processors. Trying to do so results in disaster.

Look at the XBox. It has a huge heatsink trying to cool a 700 Mhz processor, and XBoxes are crashing all over the place. And Microsoft refuses to fix them. (See earlier thread)

Look at the Apple Cube. All it had to cool the CPU was a heatsink, and the cube literally MELTED and cracks aka birthmarks formed all over the cube case. This is a major reason why nobody bought the darn things and Apple had to pull them off the market.

Expect similarly horrible things to happen to the new iMac if it too is fanless (which I doubt). The best you can hope for in this day and age of fast processors is huge heatsinks + relatively silent fans.

Well, then. That settles that.

Anyway, I think it looks kind of cool. It's not a bad machine unless you want to upgrade something other than memory.

Have you ever actually opened a G4? All that's on it is a heatsink. It's got one huge case fan on the side of it, but as for the CPU itself, it's just a heatsink.
