Am I the only One? (Halo PC issues)

My friends and I have Halo for PC, and we all installed it, and all of us have crashes on a consistent basis. We've updated the game, our vid card drivers, out chipset drivers, but no dice. Nothing helps. Besides that, we have serious lag issues on only 1024x800, and every other game I have ever played plays fine on full res.

Here are some of the configs that we have tried it on -

Athlon XP 2100+ @ 2700+
512 Memory
Radeon 9100
MSI KT4 Motherboard

Athlon 2100+ @ 2100+
512 Memory
Radeon 9100
MSI K7N2 Motherboard

Athlon XP 2100+ @ 2100+
512 Memory
Radeon 9100
MSI K7N2 Deluxe Motherboard

Pentium 4 2.4
512 Memory
Radeon 9000

Anything - nothing works

Please help!!! It's an awesome game for the 20 seconds that I can play it at a time.

yeah, i have a radeon 9500PRO (Cat 3.7)/1GB RAM/Barton 2500 and this game runs like sh!t.....doesn't crash though, just slow. Hopefully a patch will speed things up.

it's your vid card, there is a known issue with the radeon 8500 and its derived cards' directx 8.1 path, causing the game to crash with a BSOD

I seem to keep having to start the game twice. First time it shows the screen that says Halo, then drops to desktop. Second time I run it no problems.

Had a similar issue.. if the game didnt crash, it would start up and not allow me to type text.. even with the 1.02 patch, i still had this problem. If i hit F1 to check scores, the game would crash.

Ended up totally reformatting my comp and reinstalling halo and, knock on wood, havent had the problem resurface.

I have a 2500+ @ 2.36 ghz, 512 kingston ram, Radeon 9500 pro overclocked.

I keep the game at 800x600. Otherwise, in intense firefights, i get tremendous kick-your-ass lag.

I cannot play the game at 1024x768 due to the slowness during fight scenes.

my rig:

Asus P4P800
P4 2.4C @ 2.5
512MB Kingston HyperX PC3500 2-3-2-6
Radeon 9500 Pro

I run this game at 1024x800 in single-player, 1172x9xx in multiplayer. In single player, all settings are high (and it looks incredible); in multi I drop the textures to medium but keeping everything else on or HIGH (gives better field of vision at 1172).

I haven't had a single ingame crash, and only had unplayable framerates once (in single player, getting hammer by Covenant AND about a million Flood). I occasionally have an exception when starting the game (starts, show Halo splash screen, exits to desktop and displays "Gathering Exception data"). But this is only when I forget to disable anti-virus auto-protection (Norton AV). If I leave it on, Auto-Protect tries to scan every frame and texture for viruses.

As for Apotherix: I read on one of the various 9600XT reviews out there (might have been HotHardware) that there are INI changes that you can force if you are running DX8.1 hardware. I believe it was to force Pixel Shader 1.1, which would greatly increase framerates. Bounce off the AT homepage to the various 9600 XT reviews. I know it was in one of those.
