I've played FPS games since Doom 1 on a 486. I finished Dark Forces (probably my favorite FPS ever) a few days after it was released before any cheat codes were available and without using a mouse. I've played Far Cry and Half-life and CoD. I've played BF1942 and BFV and C-S.
I understand it's got amazing graphics and physics, but, come on, Doom 3 is another freaking FPS...maybe the pinnacle of shooters, but another shooter nonetheless. The fact that it's gonna be glossy and smooth doesn't distract me from that fact.
Do people really get all amped up over graphics in a game? Counter-strike uses an ancient engine, but because of the intense PvP action, you are too focussed on the game to notice how good or bad the graphics are. That, imo, is how any game should strive to be...so good you forget how it looks. Playing up the looks of a game is suggesting the game is better viewed than played. Imagine all the brain power, time, and money that went into the D3 engine being shifted to the story, level design, and gameplay. Even if the graphics and effects grab you initially, they're gonna be the same the rest of the game. If anything, I'd like to get a copy of Doom 3, load it on a high end machine and just play it for 5 minutes. Hell, I'd even like to watch somebody else play for a few minutes or even get a high res video of some gameplay. I'd get to witness the majesty of the engine just like anybody who plays through the 20 hour storyline fifteen times and spent $1000 on new hardware to do so. And don't think I'm just misery with my system...I'd be able to run it well as I just upgraded for other reasons.
I don't know. Maybe I'd be more optimistic if they were heralding the gameplay more, but, it sounds like another mindless Doom game with lots of bullets and blood and key-card operated doors.
