Am I supposed to get a gift?

The bride is 28 or something. Her younger sister aske me to be her date. We're both 24.

I've said yes. It seems I'll be at the researsal dinnner, sleep at the hotel and next morning spend all day at the wedding...

This is all fine and dandy until my friend said this,

"I hope you got her a nice wedding gift."

err... is it rude not to get one? If so what the hell should I buy? When do I present it and how much should I spend?

Yes you should absolutely. You were invited to a wedding. You should spend $50-$100 and give cash and a nice card. You should present it at the gift table at the reception.

wtf.

you never HAVE to get a gift, and to be honest, anyone throwing a wedding should never expect gifts. They are the ones throwing the party for their guests, however, it would be wise to get them a nice gift, even a small one.
what about a nice silver frame with their names and date of the marriage engraved on it?

That's actually a great idea.... a silver picture frame with their names engraved... great call!

1) Find out where she's registered for gifts
2) Buy something cheap ($25) and get a nice card
3) Present gift

And when presenting said gift/card, do not under any circumstances discuss with the bride how loud her younger sister was the night preceding while you got some nice fired-up-from-a-wedding, inhibitions-to-the-wind nookie.

QFT!!!

$50 - $100 or mopre + a card.

They are feeding you 2-3 times and buying you drinks and having a DJ. What would this cost you any other night to go out? At least $50 - $100 so that is what you should give them.

If you are a close friend I would say a $200 gift.

In the past, anyone in the wedding party was not expected to get a gift for the bride and groom. All other guests were expected to give gifts. Times change, though, and I find that people now expect gifts from everyone, including the wedding party.
