He should have saved/backed up his work before leaving.

Are you one of the IT guys did you had a valid reason for touching his machine such as software updates network issues etc. then I would see no problem.

If your just another pawn in the office and was just messing around then you should catch some hell, and he still should have saved/backed up his work before leaving.

the big deal is that he didn't save his work and if he loses his work, it will be because i touched his computer

His fault. He should know better than that. What if the power went out at night, for longer than the UPS could support?

im a lowly intern, but i was told to work on this computer. i work for an engineering consultant firm and i have no clue how many docs he had open

Always save and close files before doing anything, although you can always say there was nothing open when you got to the machine, it must have restarted for whatever reason overnight 😉

well im looking at the AUTORECOVER folder and it is dated 9:21 AM of today... thats when it bluescreened so i think im in the clear. but im still worried

If you were told to work on his computer then I don't see how you could be in trouble for it.

i probably wouldnt but i'd probably take some flak just because the work is lost

You're covered then. You're just and intern and you were told to use a specific PC. What are you going to do, say no? Even if you noticed that he had made changes to some docs, how do you know he wanted to save the new version in place of the old one?
