am i screwed?

i was trying to open the memory panel cover of my inspiron 8500 , the screw seems to have lost some threading

how do i remove it

i am planning to send it back to dell to replace the screw, ne other ideas?

Anyway, what I would do is try to rip out the screw using pliers or something.

Kalster, I would slowly and carefully remove the screw w/ needle-nose pliers, and to avoid sending it back to Dell. If only the screw and not the socket lost threading, I'm sure they'll send you a screw at no charge.

well its in the first 30 days so i wont be charged ne thing either ways
i am a bit paranoid to try a plier or something

drill it out with a bit that is about the same size a the thread, but you might want to prime it first with a smaller bit. Knock the end of with chisle/screw-driver & hammer, then use a grip plier to turn the screw.

Or, drill all holes out to larger size and uses bigger metal screws.

I'd use a thin drill bit and drill it out carefully.

Well, that's a low tech solution!

Seriously, I don't know if I'd want to get that violent on a notebook that is less than a month old and still on warranty.

Many times, the screws on notebooks cannot be taken all of the way out. They are designed this way to prevent losing the screw to your memory or battery cover.

With the screw as loose as you can get it, see if it will rotate like a straw would standing up in a glass. If so, you will just need to gently pry off the cover.

nah i cant really take it off
i think i use the wrong no screw driver and the cheap threads on the screw itself got worn out
i am thinking i will just send it back and let them replace it with a fresh screw

i know it can come out all the wya coz i took it off and added a 256 mb dimm the other day , i have a new 512 mb dimm waiting and i cant even open the damn thing , suxxx

Take the cap of a Bic pen, heat it up, and when it's slowly melting stick it into the screw so that it molds to the screw. Let it cool, and twist the cap.

The above worked wonders on my GameCube (which uses gamebit screws, and I don't have the screwdriver).
