Am I running too hot?

I'm looking into over clocking my Q6600. As i was reading up on how to do it I read about CPU temps.

My core temps are currently;

Core 0 = 54
Core 1 = 42
Core 2 = 49
Core 3= 47

But this is before ANY overclocking. Is my system running hot? The guide said I shouldn't be anywhere near 50 degrees.

I have ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler on my Q6600.

This is my first build any input would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I got these results form Core Temp.

Those seem high for idle.

I am doing essentially the same thing and wanted to check my temps before jumping to 1333/3ghz via BSEL.

under no/little load the Cores report in the mid 30c's

After 25 hrs of Prime95 (w/o errors) however I was concerned to see temps spike to the low 60c's!!!

Makes me think I can't safely OC this w/o a step up in cooling.

Low 60's for a 65nm chip are fine...I just wouldn't suggest you let them creap into the upper 60's/lower 70's. If you are getting 65c while running prime95 or orthos, that's fine as it is working your system about as hard as it will ever see. Folding, crunching or running seti will not reach these same levels of thermal expulsion.

For my self, I don't like to break 65c...but anything under that is good in my book.

from what i've heard, folding can actually be MORE stressful than prime 95. seti and other DC projects are typically not as taxing, however.

@OP, your biggest problem is the 12c difference between cores 0 & 1. as long as you don't load too much over 70 on a quad then you're ok. markfw900 has gone as high as 77c on one of his q6600 folding rigs and it's still going strong.

While that's technically true, folding still doesn't produce as high of CPU temps as Prime 95's Small FFT's, unless something has changed recently.

So my temp isn't really that abnormal?

That all depends on what your load temps are, preferably while running Prime 95 Small FFT's.

I would be taking a look at what bryanW1995 is suggesting as your temps are the first to be in order. Then worry about Ocing. Remove the HSF, clean and reapply TIM would be a good start.

You are running too hot for stock. Clean off the thermal paste and reapply with some AS5, via their instructions. Remember less is actually better than more; if it seems like it is too little, it will be right.

Update:

I just applied Artic Cooling paste of and now my temps are: 44 39 34 37, with occasional spikes up to 50s. But I'm actually doing that while the temps go up.

Are those better for stock?

Thanks for the input

You say stock but you aren't noting if this is running idle or under load. Also what's the ambient temp this system is running in? If you have a 10 degree delta at stock load you'll need to do a lot more re-seating and re-applying of the tim since a delta that large is a tad high. I myself ran a 14c delta when I first mounted but then again my cooler is really top heavy and needs to be mounted well (at the moment I'm running the system on its side so gravity evens out the pressure).
If these are idle temps however it might be cause for some concern in terms of your mounting or ambient temps, I run around 40~45 idle when I'm OCed to 3.6 and 1.5v (tad high for vcore but oh well) so if your idles are near that at stock everything I'd be worried.

Forget idle temps what you want is load temps. If idle temps are 50 and load temps are 70 that is ok, it's probably hot in your room or your case has poor ventilation. GO's run cool and can also take a serious beating temp wise.

check your cpu voltages, and if its set at auto, then try changing it to 1.25v - 1.35v.
