Just wondering if i can run a 9600gt card on an older motherboard with only a pci express x 16 slot.

yes, you should be fine running a pci-e card on a pci-e x16 slot. iirc there are some very old pci-e mobos that might have a problem with a pci-e 2.0 card, but those are few and far between. what mobo are you using?

Thats what all PCI Express based motherboards have. All of them :)

The only difference is the very newest board support PCI Express 2.0 - but this standard is both backwards AND forwards compatible.

As bryanW1955 mentioned, there is a very small chance that very old / cheap PCIe boards will not work, but that's due to not following the PCIe specs.

The issues were mostly with VIA chipsets, so I think Intel chipsets should be ok.
