My Opteron 280 hits 75°C. According to this my temperature should be between 47°C and 67°C. Tyan say it should be in 50°C region. MY friend with exactly same MOBO and CPU gets max 50°C under full load.

My PC shop says that my temperature is normal. I disagree with him and I am in the process of typing a strong letter. Just wanted to double check with you guys.
Am I right or wrong?

damn thats hot... that seriously cant be good for the proc's life expectancy.

as far as im concirned, your right. opterons run hot already but not THAT hot. looks like the cooling isnt sufficient... maybe something's seated wrong?

Exactly thanks for the confirmation. I have enough data to back my claim now and cut the crap about him saying that it's normal temperature.

Your PC shop is out to lunch ... my old Winchester 3200+ actually ran hotter the my current Opteron 170 @ 2.4gz... it seldom tops 50c.

I suspect it's an issue with the mobo BIOS. Your system would likely be re-booting/crashing at those temps.

Tyan's normally pretty good with such issues. I know that earlier ABit boards were notorious for showing "high temps" - but that's because they read the thermal diode off the chip and not the socket. But even if that was the case, 65C is way too toasty for an Opteron to be running at, even under load IMO.

That may all be true, but the OP didn't report any problems, just a high temp. Makes me suspect a BIOS issue. Hmmm, maybe...

Mutated: What did you use to get the Temps? BIOS readings, MBM, or other Temp monitoring program?

well I got high readings both in the Bios and by using the Tayn utility. Anyway I have all my monley back now. Thh PC was crashing a lot. I had 50 crashes in 2 weeks that I owned the PC. I think heat was only one of the problems. Good ridance!

ah, so there were crashes. Ya, that would be a PITA. Glad to hear you got your money back.

Did they assemble it?

Yes they had assembled and installed everything. That is why 2 weeks of stress was enough and I gave it back.

Now hit up GH and read some threads on building your own. :D
