OK - since the kids I have not spent alot of time keeping up with the hardware world, so it is understandable that I might have a bit of trouble when updating stuff. However, this is ridiculous. Please help.

I have an abit kr7a motherboard that I want to flash to the latest bios. The latest bios says to run it in dos - no prob, this is as expected. However, when I try to run Win XP in dos mode, I don't see the option. All I see that seems relevant is a "safe mode with command prompt" option. The confusing thing is that Abit says this option is only for win95/98 - I am sure this is a mistake since I do not remember this option with those old operating systems. In any event, when I load safe mode with command prompt, and then try to run the batch file for the bios, windows warns me not to run this in windows - well how the f@ck do I get into dos then???!!!

Very frustrated by something that should be a snap - when are these moronic companies going to make things straightforward for the end-user (and in a related question, when are they going to hire some English proof readers??).

So the question, is how do I get into MS-Dos if I am running WinXP so that I can flash my motherboard bios?

Cheers,

By the way - here is the extent of Abit's instructions for the bios upgrade:

1. How to upgrade BIOS:

a. Boot into MS-DOS or "Safe mode and command prompt" if you are using
Windows95/98
b. Run "kr7a9n.exe" to extract all files.
c. Run "runme.bat"

*** Please notice that we suggest you flashing the bios with switches

"/py /sn /cd /cp /cc /cks /R" or by "runme.bat".

d. For more detail, please visit:

http://fae.abit.com.tw/eng/download/bioshelp.htm (English)

2.After BIOS updated, pull off the power core and then clear the CMOS data
via jumper before restarting system please.

Click on MY Computer in WinXP,select floppy icon and right click and select format, you will see an option for "Create a MS-DOS startup disk" put a tick in that small box, remember to put the bios file on the floppy after and reboot with the floppy in drive and follow bios flashing instructions.
