It's an incredibly nerdy thing to do, but I'm gonna do it anyway. :) On this other message board, a Ben Folds message board, this one guy always insults me when I post, and he has tons of other people who seem to agree with him. I can't figure out what the deal is. I'll just let you read, and decide.

I am iguanaman on those boards, and the other guy is bassface.

http://www.benfolds.org/forum/?id=2695

edit: Just thought I should add a warning, this board has no language censor and some of the members have pretty coarse language.

I think you are far too worried about what these guys think of you... some advice for you would be that if they all are slamming on you all the time you are not wanted there... either lie low for a while or get a new handle and try to be less confrontational when you post.

I don't think that anything you posted was all that pompous or full of yourself, but some people might read it that way.

The other option is to get into a big flame war with all of them every chance you get, but that tends to just burn a lot of energy, and unless you can get some allies you are probably going to get frustrated with it.

Sounds to me like some college fvck who isn't very good at playing classical music. I can't play any instrument (unless you count a conch shell as an instrument). Can't even carry a tune when I sing. But it's quite clear to me that classical music has about as much in common with pop/rock as a Geo Metro has in common with a HMVEE (military version of the Hummer).

I can see where one might get the impression that you think classical is superior, but one would have to be hyper-sensitive to blow it as much out of proportion as he did. I'd say that it's symptomatic of another trend among students, which is that history is no longer considered important. Students don't want to learn from the past greats, instead they want to be "artists" and focus on absurd modernist approaches, which are essentially analogous to the parable of "The Emperor's New Clothes". Art students do things (and worse, get funding for things) like wearing a lobster suit for 6 months while building a small house and not talking to anyone. All the artistic cronies prattle on and on about the "masterful insight into man's existence" of an empty canvass hanging in a museum. They extoll the virtues of these absurdities because if they don't, then their fellow artists will claim that they are not "insightful" or "original", or worse, that they are snobs for preferring more classic works of art.

Ignore bassfase, he's more pompous than you are, he just can't see it. Keep defending classical music, it can always use another friend.

I would say that until you are actually making a successful living playing the piano, you shouldn't boast that you are superior to someone that is.

Even if it's true, it does make you sound boastful and arrogant.

If you're as good as you think you are, eventually someone may stand up and take notice and give you the praise that you think you deserve.

BassFace seems to have a personal vendetta against you. You can take comfort in realizing that he/she does not really know you at all therefore you have become representative of something BassFace dislikes and feels the need to speak out against.

If you feel you need validation from them and resent not getting you aren't necessarily being pompous but you are being shallow. People are allowed to have opinions, even when those opinions are blatantly ignorant as they are in this case. There's nothing you can do about that but endeavor to eliminate ignorance.

Well said, and why I don't have much respect for late-20th & 21st-century "art." I enjoy both classical music (especially Baroque) and popular (everything from Celtic to some Metal) and would not say that classical is superior, just more structured and analytical. Good popular music can be far superior to classical in conveying images and emotions.

But see, that's the thing, I never said I was superior to Mr. Folds, yet they seem to take it that way. I said I was probably a better classical pianist, and seeing as the entire thread is about how he never learned classical, that's probably true. Oh well. I don't really know why I posted this, guess I was just kinda fuming. THanks for replying though.

theyre having an arguament about whether you too full of yourself on a website devoted to on musician.
WIth people who start every messege with "Ben Folds said." People at AT don't idolize Anand that much. Even people at HardOCP don't talk about kyle that way

I felt it was an ample reply since this thread wreaks of general lameness. Who gives a rats a$$ if you have a minor squibble on another forum. Get over it and move on. :)

JohnJohn320, I have your kinda taste too. I luv classical piano, though I'm not a pianist. It's still on my list of things I must learn soon.

Putting that aside, don't take Bassface's comment that personal. I have been accused of being condescending for having a similar taste, but I shrug it off. Make your music and I'll buy it if it's as luvly as the classical piano music I have around here! ;)

Anwyay, his comment is not new to me. I have heard people say things like that to folks who speak like ya. Let me just put it this way: Honestly, I do see some pride in your comment, but it is a positive pride--not the absolutely arrogant type. I think pride is good when it is not in excess (a reasonable measure of pride is necessary to suceed in life, I think). Excessive pride is another issue. . . . And yes, I do think there is such thing as a reasonable pride . . . we all possess it at some point of our lives. :)
