Am I overheating?

This question is for outdated equipment for anandtech standards, but I figure I ask anyways :)

I have a barebone computer I built for simple home use, with a AMD XP1800+ CPU. Lately it has been shutting down randomly, and I think it's because of overheating issues. I tried doing a search but there are just too many things to look thru.

Anyways, on the MBM5 its reading 44C MB temp and 55C CPU temp. Around those temps it'll suddenly shut down. (typical of a overheated CPU). Is the temp too high? I'm running the heatsink that came with the retail package, but the case is a very small case because I like to keep things concealed.

Thinking of ordering new heatsink, fans and artic silver, will this solve my problem?

my AMD XP1700+ runs at 32c full load - 26 idle.

I think the upper limit for the 'Thunderbird'? cores is around 70c - perhaps you have set your BIOS to auto shut down if reaches 60c?.

Personnaly I would get a brand new HSF. the retail ones don't use good quality bearings and could be restricted due to dust etc - causing it not to run at full speeds.

55C is a little bit high for "just" stock speeds. Check to see if the cpu fan is even spinning. Secondly, you may need to redo the thermal goop layer between the HS and the CPU. Also, check to see if your BIOS is set to auto shut down at 55C.

Hi guys thanks for your replies. The computer shuts down when the temp hangs out around 57C for a few minutes.

bobalong- what setup do u have? I dont want something thats gonna sound like a hair dryer. I bought a few of the large copper heatsinks that were recommended. It cools well, but dust starts collecting in the heatsink and reduces the effectiveness after a month or two. Plus I have a compact case that requires me to remove the PSU to access the CPU area... so you can only imagine how much top clearance I have.

tiamat- the computer is used for web browsing.. the bios doesnt have an "auto shut down" that I remember, but I'll double check that. The thermal paste was redone last week in accordance with ASIII instructions.

Oroo- the PSU doesnt seem to be overheating, but I did replace the PSU fan with a panaflo to reduce the noise and I did monitor the PSU temps to make sure they weren't off the map.

Any other ideas? I always have a standard way of debugging stuff but this is at the end of my rope short of spending money left and right.
