I haven't kept up with new hardware lately but. isn't there a type of IDE card that will allow me to put more than 2 IDE devices on the same chain? I thought i remember seeing it on an ASUS motherboard?

Yes you're smoking crack, you cant put more that 2 devices on 1 IDE cable.

so you can have 4 devices total.

Perhaps you were smoking but you might also be refering to an IDE card (fits in PCI Slot) that would allow you to have more than the standard 4 IDE devices on one system. Using something like a Promise IDEController card you could add up to four more devices to a system.

That's a cable made by a crack smoker. IDE attaches the chipset to one (drive integrated) controller, and this controller in the drive can hook up to one or two drives.
Neither the master/slave decision process, nor the data transfer protocol allow for more than two drives.
