Am I missing something?

Well, I know laptop LCD monitors often run at higher resolutions than desktop LCD monitors. example - the 17" WUXGA's.

So why don't they do this on at least certain models of desktop LCD monitors? Is there some technical barrier I'm not aware of? Would the price be too high? I'm also wondering if they wouldn't display lower resolutions as well (like if someone was going to play games with lesser hardware), and panel makers are staying away from making them.

I've just always wondered that...

Yeah, this has always pissed me off.

Why is it that I can buy a 15.4" 1920x1200 or 17" 1920x1200 notebook but I can't get that same size in a desktop display?

I don't want a big 20+ inch LCD on my desktop. I want A high rest 19" -17". What's wrong with these LCD manufactures?

Yeah, even if they cost more, I thought that an LCD manufacturer would at least make something. That's why I'm wondering of there's a technical limitation

They do make high resolution on smaller monitors. It's just that even if they did, most people wouldn't pay the higher price. IBM made T221 with ultra high res on 22" screen and it didn't sell well because it was too expensive. ibm t221

Trust me, if companies thought the market was there and people would buy, they would've made it. Or you could start a company and make it and become extremely rich.

no real demand=no product. end of story.

the reason for the high resolutions is because laptop screen are cheap and they suck. if you notice they have a viewing angle of 2 degrees, and they have terrible contrast and brightness. with all this gone, battery life is improved and the resolution is what they can do to make the price normal. if good lcd's were that high they would be thousands of dollars.
