am I missing something, or are active displayport adapters cheap now?

I'm in the market for a new monitor and I was looking for something with displayport so I could entertain Eyefinity at a later date, without having a useless (or mismatched) monitor - but I decided to look into active adapters, and they seem to be quite inexpensive. Last I heard, they were $100-ish.

Am I missing something here, or should I just go ahead with whatever display I want, and pick up this adapter later?

They are cheaper now, and more of a selection, in terms of feature set. The one you linked is single link dvi.
So its fine up to 1080p.
The old more expensive active adapters that used power, were often display port to dual link dvi, giving you up to 2560x1600, I believe.

Most people squeaked by with display port to vga, which also don't need added power.

I'm not sure, technically what makes a display port dongle active or not. I thought it used to be, because it used external power.
Thats not the case now it seems.

Great! I don't have the money for 2560x1600 displays anyway (let alone the video cards to drive them), so I might just get one of these if I can't find appropriate monitors with DP.
