Am I missing something? Is there no Google VOIP calling on Android phones?

So Google VOIP calling to phone numbers is available on desktop computers and apparently now on iOS as well.

Is there such a feature on Android phones? The best I can do is voice chat with people via the Google Hangouts app, but of course that's not talking with a phone number.

that should be changing any day now from what I understand of the new hangouts app.

edit: after reading some more it looks like i'm wrong. :(
I think google would get too much heat from the carriers if they did that right now.

Talkatone app. Uses your voice number and its free. I used it when I was in Italy to call home.

But no official Google method even though it is already possible on other platforms.

Well, it entirely depends on what you want to use. If you wanted SIP -- not through Google Voice -- You can already do that through the default phone app.

Since there is already a working alternative, I dunno why not having a Google "official" version would be any better/worse off.

I've used it on my Android phones to avoid international charges when calling Canada, but it still counts against my allotment of minutes. Very nice feature, but no, it's not VoIP.

Unfortunately, I forgot to reinstall it when I did a factory reset on my Nexus 4, perhaps assuming that it came preinstalled on Nexus phones, and I ended up with $65 in international charges. Not really sure who to be mad at on that one... but it's easier to blame Google and my carrier than myself. :)
