Am I missing BR player discussion threads?

I've been searching for a while and haven't seen much of anything with respect to blu ray player recommendations. I'm not sure what the deal is, but I can't find any good info on these forums.

Does anyone have any opinions on players in the 100-200 dollar range? I have a Samsung 1080p 52" LCD, 5.1 sound, and everything is connected via HDMI. I don't know if any of that is relevant, but I'd like to get a player that loads somewhat quickly and doesn't have compatibility issues with the various movies out there. I do not want a PS3 so please don't recommend that, but anything else is fair game.

PS3 is and will remain the best choice for BR playback for the foreseeable future. It has zero compatibility issues I'm aware of and is constantly being updated. I mean, I have a first generation unit and it will be 3d capable soon? How many other first-gen players can make that claim? Its worth every penny even if you use it purely for BR.

This +1000. Why do you think there aren't any threads about it? We're all too busy watching blu ray discs on our PS3s 😛

I have a Samsung BD-P1600. I havent had any compatibility issues and I think it is a great BR player. It is the only BR player I have, so I don't know how slow/fast it is compared to others. I haven't tested out its BD Live capability yet. Firmware updates (2 so far) over the net have gone w/o any problems.

Sony BDP-S360, I've had it since last December. Did a firmware update when I got it, and never had a problem.

Compared to a PS3:
-paid 150$ instead of 300$
-has a real remote instead of using a controller
-quieter
-can be stacked with other components in my TV cabinet
-has a display on the front

Don't listen to these guys about the PS3. It is a great BD player, but it is not the only option out there now.

As for my recommendation, I'd HIGHLY recommend picking up the Sony BDPS1000ES while you still can, because at that price, it isn't going to last long. Much better solution than the PS3. Fantastic BD playback and great DVD upscaling performance. It also has a pretty nice analog section. And did I mention it comes equipped with wifi and a 5 year warranty. 🙂

PS3 (Blu + Netflix + DLNA + games) or Panny BD65 (Blu + Netflix).

If you don't already have a media tank, the DLNA streaming of the PS3 opens up all sorts of possibilities.

Actually, best Blu-Ray playback for <$1k is the Oppo BDP-83. I'd still go with the PS3, though. It's 95% of the Oppo in quality and does so much more.

Please try to answer my question without trying to talk down to me. It's too expensive. I need something decent that is cheaper.

There's really nothing that's cheap that is "decent". Cheap BR players have really long load times, serious compatibility issues, cheap drives, and clunky remotes. They're poorly made and just don't hold up. Buying something cheaper than a PS3 isn't much better than flushing your $150 down the toilet.

I take it back, that ES is a good unit. Get it now, there's nothing better for $200.

Wrong.

Have to agree. The PS3 is absolutely the best solution out there. I own a sharp bluray player and it does nothing but stutter, and crap out. It may have something to do with netflix movies, but i still see the similar situation (much less though) from my owned movies. If i take a netflix bluray movie to a friends, and watch it there after it stuttering on my sharp one, it doesnt stutter at all. Just works like a champ. Learned my lesson.

What an insightful post, that really spoke volumes to me. No, it isn't wrong. Compare a $100 BD player to a PS3 or that ES posted above, I dare you.
You're a drive-by who hasn't followed Blu-Ray player releases for at least a year. The PS3 is now one of the *slower* players.

For basic Blu-Ray and Netflix playback, spending more than the cost of the Panasonic BD65 is a waste.
