<zips up flame retardant suit>
so i just watched the replay and all i have to say is what the hell happened to music in the past few years???

i realized tonite why it is that i listen to the 'rock/classic rock' station in town.

the people's choice award said alot to me...of the 5 nominees, only one possibly writes/performs their own music, and that's limp bizkit...c'mon there has to be something alot better than that

and lets not even get started on the video of the year!!! i mean lady marmalade? wtf is wrong with the music scene of late? i do have to say though, at least u2, a band which, no matter your musical liking, has shown some sort of talent got nominated, that's something at least.

and feel free to flame away, but maybe someone feels something like i do?

You're not getting old. Popular music just plain sucks. I doubt you will get flamed.

Just as w/ technology - musical technology - "advances" if you wish - change just as quickly. But keep in mind, that what is hot this year, isn't something that will continue to be hot next year. The music scene is quite metamorphic in this retrospect. Everything changes... and trust me the "People's Choices Award" are just that... people's choices... there are many rabid fans of many groups that you might not find so appealing... however it's the sheer amount of fans that are actually helping these groups gain this sort of recognition. Think about it... the music scene shapes lives... and if there are people who are looking for direction in a particular way, they'd look towards their idols musicians.

Why do you suppose that Britney Spears has influenced so many girls? It's because she's getting guys to gawk over her... and what do these little girls want? The exact same thing. Therefore they don't necessarily listen to Britney's music because they enjoy it (even if they do say so 99.9 percent of the time) they listen to it because they want to be like her.

The entire music market has really taken off to be just that - a market... there are different perspectives on what sales and what doesn't sale in today's society... and music is definitely one of those things - you either make it or break it, your biggest asset now isn't just your talent (what talent? ;)) but rather the fans that buy your records which in turn produce a profit and life-span as an "artist". :)

Music is so bad lately it's not funny
I have over 1000 albums that are all fantastic

I would listen to any of them instead of the current pop and rap crap. :disgust:

(and yes I have about 300 CDs):D

damn, gg, i wasn't expecting a ms. cleo response on this one:)

i understand all that, but i mean really, what happened to all the groups that actually had talent and knew how to write/perform music rather than sing or kinda carry a tune w/ a backbeat generated by someone who is much more talented and much lower paid than the person using it?

<< Yup the music sucks but the price is right

*cough* download all of it for free *cough*
>>

It's mainly the reputational revenue that these groups/artists are bringing in - not so much as the amount of CDs they sell (although that is a HUGE aspect of it). Think about it... you think NSYNC would be this popular if they didn't get MTV exposure (of course not) - exposure first, records later - and in some cases TALENT can come later! thank you very much O-Town ;)

I agree totally...

Lady Marmalade is garbage..
what the hell was that song about anyways? you can't even understand what they're saying..
all of them look disgusting, and the damn song is about some stupid movie that doesn't even pertain to
anything.

I watch MTV and TRL sometimes... the music is garbage.. the videos are garbage...
everything on TRL is image, it's the way you look, even if you can't sing worth a damn..
you present an image to a 12 year old girl that is appealing, people vote for you.. it's disgusting.
And the thing is, they play the video over and over and over again. It gets played out in 2 days.

Britney Spears is the pinnacle of what trash music is...
she lip synced at the VMA's with her awful new song. All her songs are garbage...
the only reason she is successful is because of her image.

Now I am a big fan of all types of music.. but this pop thing is just gettin played out. I can hang with some
nsync (who actually did write their last album), but i agree pop music is going to sh#et

One band I am impressed with is Linkin Park... these guys have a fresh new sound..
It's a mixture of hard rock, smooth melodies and singing, and rap. Unlike Durst and Limp Biskit,
the lead singer actually has a fabulous singing voice AND ahard core scream like all those other hard rock bands.
The rapping and the singing, are broken up in to two people, which makes it a great mix.
Go download "in the end" by them, and you will understand what i'm talkin about

No,I pretty much agree that a ton of the music blows lately. Its all r&b on MTV. For real music you just have to buy cds.

Exactly - I can understand the kind of BS that the people must suck up out there to actually get a group some exposure. I have to admit that the Making the Band series on ABC was pathetic, and worthless... however that's just my opinion, and I am obviously wrong considering how "cool" O-Town seems to be right. Speaking of O-Town, did you hear what AJ and Nick Carter said about them?

I'm paraphrasing

"New Boy Bands Suck"

Something to that extent - but a lot more colorful - I must say that the BSBs were some of the "pioneers" (if I can really use that word) of boy bands this side of the Beetles. And they seem to be getting the point that there are too many groups that are popping up everywhere and too much "young" talent... To tell you guys the truth, I'm sure that we can round up a group of 5 guys here at ATOT w/ minimal talent - get the right exposure and groups helping us, and before you know it, we'll be on the VMAs accepting our Viewer's Choice w/ legions of girls screaming, "I love you Dennis!!" - "I love you!!" - "I'm pregnant, GG!" things to that extent :|

that's exactly my point gg....and i don't think bsb could be called the pioneers at this point...about a decade ago, there was this amazing group known as nkotb;)

but the point still remains that you don't need to have talent to be one of these groups...i mean damn, w/ the amount of time these guys spend on tour and the number of albums they're churning out, how can they? all they do is practice a few lines and let some tech clean it up for them:disgust:

I agree. I don't like much in the 80's, and hate just about everything in the 90's plus. Give me my classic 60's and 70's rock thank you very much. And I just turned 19 btw.

I watched the VMAs only to see U2 perform. They are my favorite band. Other then them and perhaps Moby, the music sucked. I don't know about other cities, but the radio in Atlanta sucks! I only listen to NPR or talk radio when in the car. Otherwise, I play CD-Rs with mixes of my choice. Radio in Europe is a different story, though. I really like a lot of the trance/techno that is played over there. I actually think there is a lot of talent in the trance/techno scene, and it's unfortunate that in most cirlces it has not caught on here. I hope this pop/boy band/girl band $h!t goes away soon! It's no wonder MTV's flagship station has gone from playing music videos to playing Reality TV/soap-operas/political crap! Look at the music they have to deal with!

BTW, I can't believe Mic Jagger's name was mentioned the same sentence as Britney's! What a total sham!

I don't think I own a single rock/r&b/pop cd, and I think it's obvious why. Most of my purchase power yields itself to the greats: Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, Chopin, Haydn, ad nauseum. It's clear classical music is timeless, and you get SO much more from it as a listener (and player). I can't remember the last time I wanted to revel in my thoughts with the likes of Limp Bizkit playing in the background.

AMEN to that! Classical makes you smarter. Why else are parents encouraged to play it for their infants?
