Am I in the wrong?

Kinda long, so feel free to jump down to the cliffs.

I'm in the process of building a new computer, so Thursday evening I placed an order with a reputable online retailer (Retailer A) for two components of my rig. Friday morning I received an email stating that my order could not be processed because my shipping address was not the billing address on my credit card (I shipped everything to my work address rather than home).

To avoid any delays/hassles, I canceled the order and placed another order with the same retailer using my PayPal account hoping to mitigate the shipping problem. Unfortunately, a little while later the retailer writes back and requests that my shipping address be validated through PayPal as well.

At this point, I figure my order will not be going through unless I validated my address, which I didn't really want to do since I haven't had this problem with any other retailer and I needed these parts to ship that afternoon (validating is a multi-day process). So, in a few emails back and forth to Retailer A, I asked them to cancel my order and explained why I was doing so.

With that out of the way, I proceeded to place a new order with another retailer (Retailer B) for the same components. This order went through without a hitch and shipped immediately.

About 30 minutes later, I received an email from Retailer A stating that they decided to go ahead and process my order despite my request to cancel. At this point I immediately called Retailer A, but I was too late. They already shipped my order, and were not happy with me at all.

When I receive the package, I plan on sending it straight back to Retailer A for a refund. I don;t mind paying the return shipping, but I am already guessing that I will be charged a restocking fee for the return. I don't think I should have to pay this fee because I requested that my order by canceled and was under the impression that my order would not ship unless I validated my address: a procedure that I did not carry out.

I don't want to be an ass as I quite like this retailer, and I do feel partially responsible for the situation as I could have handled it better. However, I don't think I should have to pay.

So, am I in the wrong or should I resist the restocking fee?

Cliffs:

1) Placed order with Retailer A.
2) Retailer A declines shipping address because it is different than my billing address.
3) I cancel order.
4) I place same order with Retailer B who ships immediately.
5) Retailer A decides to process order anyway.
6) I contact Retailer A who is not happy with me.

WTF - Retailer A shipped anyway after you said to cancel the order? Go with Retailer B from now on.

Retailer A can kiss your ass, they give you grief about placing an order, so you cancel the order, and they ship anyway? I wouldn't use them again.

Retailer A needs to go pound sand. You explicitly cancelled the order after they declined to ship it to the shipping address you provided. They decided to ship anyway so they wouldn't lose the sale, which to me would mean that no only did they lose the sale, but they lost a customer as well.

Agree with everything stated so far.

You canceled, they shipped anyway. Make sure you leave a negative review on a few review sites stating this.

I had something similar happen to me a few years back and I pretty much strong arm the company to prevent being charged. It's a pain in the ass but it's not my fault they chose to ignore me in the first place.

Thanks for the feedback.

That was my initial reaction, too. I tend to get worked up sometimes and make rash decisions, so I wanted to get some outside advice before starting the return process.

so did retailer A charge your paypal account or did they charge a credit card?

because that could make the difference in if you end up paying a restocking fee.

Wow! This is probably the first thread that asks "Am I in the wrong?" that I have to say no on.

If they charge you immediately reverse the charge. After you canceled they shouldn't have shipped until they got some confirmation that you still wanted it.

This.

If they try to charge you anything at all, dispute it with your credit card company.

The payment was sent through PayPal using a credit card. So, I'm guessing I will need to resolve the issue with PayPal first before going through my credit card (please correct me if I am wrong).

I have never refused a package sent via USPS. Does it work the same as UPS/FedEx (i.e., they simply take the package and return it to the sender)? Hopefully I'll be able to intercept the package here at work before it is accepted.

Yup when it's delivered refuse it so you don't have to pay return shipping.

If they don't refund, call your CC company and dispute charges.

Write "refused - return to sender" and stick it back in the mail box.

You're going to pay the restocking fee and shipping return fee? Don't be such a pushover.

Nah, I wasn't going to pay the restocking fee. But, I'm not against paying $5 to drop it back in the mail because I think I could have handled everything a little better myself and I realize that retailers can make mistakes. However, I have been emboldened by the ATOT gang. I will refuse the shipment and make sure I am refunded the full amount. If they refuse, I'll stop the payment through AMEX.

Actually, the part that ruined the deal for me wasn't the mistake. It was when I called the retailer. I was greeted by a friendly lady, and while she searched for an open computer to pull up my order, we joked back and forth. However, as soon as she realized what the mistake was (or perhaps that I was the guy from all the emails), her attitude changed completely to one of severe annoyance. As I mentioned above, I called roughly 5 minutes after they said my order had been processed and shipped, but she made it sound like
I was causing her a huge amount of work to pull a package from the outgoing mail. After that I pretty much decided not to use this retailer ever again.

That's what I wanna know too. I don't get why people are trying to cover up bad companies. You owe them nothing and you're doing the community a favor by exposing their bad customer service practice. It's not like company A knows who you are and can send out ninjas to kill you.

Unless the company is Ninja Assassins-4-Hire.

You never know about ninjas.

Anyway, company A is Performance-PCs.com. Company B is irrelevant, but it was FrozenCPU.com.
