Kinda long, so feel free to jump down to the cliffs.
I'm in the process of building a new computer, so Thursday evening I placed an order with a reputable online retailer (Retailer A) for two components of my rig. Friday morning I received an email stating that my order could not be processed because my shipping address was not the billing address on my credit card (I shipped everything to my work address rather than home).
To avoid any delays/hassles, I canceled the order and placed another order with the same retailer using my PayPal account hoping to mitigate the shipping problem. Unfortunately, a little while later the retailer writes back and requests that my shipping address be validated through PayPal as well.
At this point, I figure my order will not be going through unless I validated my address, which I didn't really want to do since I haven't had this problem with any other retailer and I needed these parts to ship that afternoon (validating is a multi-day process). So, in a few emails back and forth to Retailer A, I asked them to cancel my order and explained why I was doing so.
With that out of the way, I proceeded to place a new order with another retailer (Retailer B) for the same components. This order went through without a hitch and shipped immediately.
About 30 minutes later, I received an email from Retailer A stating that they decided to go ahead and process my order despite my request to cancel. At this point I immediately called Retailer A, but I was too late. They already shipped my order, and were not happy with me at all.
When I receive the package, I plan on sending it straight back to Retailer A for a refund. I don;t mind paying the return shipping, but I am already guessing that I will be charged a restocking fee for the return. I don't think I should have to pay this fee because I requested that my order by canceled and was under the impression that my order would not ship unless I validated my address: a procedure that I did not carry out.
I don't want to be an ass as I quite like this retailer, and I do feel partially responsible for the situation as I could have handled it better. However, I don't think I should have to pay.
So, am I in the wrong or should I resist the restocking fee?
Cliffs:
1) Placed order with Retailer A.
2) Retailer A declines shipping address because it is different than my billing address.
3) I cancel order.
4) I place same order with Retailer B who ships immediately.
5) Retailer A decides to process order anyway.
6) I contact Retailer A who is not happy with me.
