Alright, I will finally begin to build my new pc on saturday (if newegg gives me a tracking number and moogr delivers on time). I've had the same computer for about 6 years now, which consists of: Pentium 4 Northwood processor clocked at 2.52ghz, 512MB of memory, one stick of samsung and the other i have no idea, a very old 160GB Maxtor hdd, and a nVidia GeForce 4MX 64MB video card. My new rig will consist of a Intel Xeon 3110 3ghz processor, 2gigs of crucial ballistix ram (DDR2 1066), 320GB Seagate hdd (sata connections), Gigabyte ds3r mobo, and a 8800gts 512MB eVga video card. This will all be displayed on my 50" DLP TV.

How much of a difference am I looking at from the past to present?

it's time to go shopping for some games that'll hold you over for the next year for shits and giggles

for the internet and email, zero. for other things that actually require computer horsepower, lots.

I went from a GeForce 6800 to an 8800GTS and that was great. I recommend picking up Call of Duty 4.
I'd say that's a pretty huge leap you're taking.

You're not only in for a Mind Blast + Mindflay combo (with MF cast just as MB finishes of course, to avoid the global cooldown), but you're in for the Shadow Word: Death finisher as well.

I'd say you're in for a big improvement. I recently went from a 2.4ghz A64 3400+ (1GB RAM) with a radeon 9800 pro to a 1.8ghz(clocked at 2.7ghz atm) c2d with 4gb ram and a 8800gt

It's all faster. Everything. Even stuff like bringing up web browsers and such is faster. Probably has more to do with my large amount of multitasking, but it's noticable.

Best of luck to ya with your new comp

It will be as different as going from SDTV to HDTV. Your new computer will be very nice.
As for HDTV's as monitors, I got a 42" that I sit about 2.5' from (my 22" i sat about a 1.5' from).
Oh, I don't know how DLP acts as a computer monitor... I read LCD is better for sports and video games, plasma is better for movies. Maybe i got sports and movies mixed up, but LCD is supposed to be best for games.
Even for every day things he will notice a difference.
