Am I hitting my throughput ceiling?

Here is what I have. PC --> Linksys WRT54G --> cheapo Linksys 10/100Mbps Hub/Switch --> PS3. Only reason I have the Hub in there is because I dont have an ethernet cable long enough to reach from the PS3 to the router. PC is in my room, PS3 and router are in the living room on opposite walls.
Anyway, I've made a few "HD" encodes of a few of my movies using Dr. DivX. The bit-rate of the video can often reach 20Mbps or greater during fast moving/action scenes and its when I hit this high of a bit-rate the video begins to stutter. I've seen one movie peak at about 55Mbps. 20Mbps cant be the peak performance of 100Mbps branded equipment can it? And if so, will throwing a Gigabit Switch in there and connecting my PC and PS3 to it maybe alleviate this problem? I'm using TVersity as the mediaserver on my PC.
And the encodes are not flawed, I copied one to the PS3's HDD and it played stutter free.
Thanks

What's the model of the switch, it might not be a full duplex switch especially if it's old.

I would just head to monoprice.com and buy an ethernet cable long enough, also make sure that all of your cables are factory made.

The switch is a Linksys EZXS55W. It's about 3-4 years old, probably paid $10-15 for it. And by factory made do you mean store bought and not home made?

No, you aren't even close.

However, the PS3 might not have negotiated Duplex/Speed properly with the switch, and this *will* cause a problem if it's what happened. However, I'm not familiar with the nuances of PS3 networking.

Try moving the PS3 to a different switch and power/off on.

Also, if you can copy files to/from the PC to the PC3 you can simply time how long it takes and do the math accordingly to see if there's a discrepency. I see a lot of complaints about PS3 Wifi and internet speed, but little info on how it behaves on a local LAN.

I did transfer a file the other day and it took about 5 minutes for a 3.85 GB file. That comes to about 13 MBps, so something is obviously wrong. Guess I'll play around with it and see what happens.

for 100mb ethernet, that is completely within spec. remember, MBps (MegaBYTES) is not Mbps (MegaBITS)....there is 8 bits in a byte.

Yea, I suddenly realized that when I was typing the big B instead of a little b in my last post. I'll try out a Gig switch and see if that works.

What a Giga switch is going to do?

Is the PS3 has Giga card?

To get Giga Network all the components that are involved in the transfer has to be Giga.

1000BASE-T is Gigabit correct? Link to PS3 specs.

Yap the PS3 has Giga NIC according to the spec in the linked page.

Your trouble can be a result of cables switch computer or PS3.

As a first stage you should put the computer temp. near the PS3 and connected then directly with a good commercially made cable to rule out cables and switch problems.
