Am I getting screwed?

Hi everybody, I was wondering if you all could help me out with a problem. Please excuse me if this is a stupid question, I'm a bit of a novice at the hardware thing.

I bought a Quantex SM series computer. It was one of those deals where you could configure the system to your demands, so I upgraded to an 800mhz Intel PentiumIII
chip. When I started flipping through the hardware features
section of the motherboard book, it said that the board supports from 233mhz
to 733mhz cpu core speeds. Does this mean my system is not utilizing its
full power? Am I getting screwed? The motherboard manual they sent me
says its a M6VCG System board. Do you think they sent me the wrong manual?
Would the system even work if the chip wasn't supported by the
motherboard?

Any help you all could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah Quantx uses Biostar boards....

Well, USED Biostar boards until they went out of business.

The reason why the manual says 733 is because that was what was available at the time the manual was made.

Fact is, the M6VCG can go up to a gig according to the test report on Biostar's webpage.

Furthermore, Quantex are not proprietary. So, assuming that it DIDN'T support your NEXT CPU purchase, it's just a regualr ol' ATX case so you can throw anything in there.

ALSO, does the CPU boot up and say 800? If the BIOS didn't support the 800, it wouldn't say 800 and probably wouldn't be working properly now.

Probably.......No, have you called them and discussed this with them? You may be getting upset about a non-issue!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies (ToBeMe and johnnyGURU).

I actually have been trying to reach Quantex for two weeks with no luck. When I ordered the machine a month ago, I was told I would have 24/7 tech support. Apparently, they've changed that to just 9 hours a day 7 days a week. I tried calling customer support too, but I couldn't get through. Everytime I call either tech or cust. support, they keep you on the line for 15 minutes, tell you that there are currently no available agents, tell you to call back later, and then hangup on you. I guess their fairly cheap prices come at the expense of their service.

Dude. Quantex filed bankruptcy.

Forget them.

The motherboard is a Biostar M6VCG. You're fine. Take a look at Biostar's website.

I know about this. I was a big Quantex fan until their parent company went under and what was left of Quantex was a crippled wreck. :(

Take a look at QuantexSucks.org and see for yourself. Ignore the part about "Quantex sells junk computers". Quantex used the same parts that many of the people on this BBS use. People just say that now because Quantex built the machines and now does not support them, so they're pissed off.

Quantex is gone?! Wow, must have been a non-issue thing, I never heard that! I have actually worked on several of them. Some guy around here got one and several of his friends bought one too. They always talked highly of their tech support/cust. service! Yeah, Jonny's right though, the mobo should be fine!

Thanks for the tips on the motherboard. I'm a little pissed that my warranty probably doesn't mean jack anymore, but I guess there's always a local pc-repair shop.

<< Doh! Perhaps I should have spent the extra money on a Dell. >>

No, because when it comes to upgrading, you WILL be screwed.

At least with a Quantex, you get a standard ATX form factor. With a Dell you get a Proprietary machine that once it's obsolete, it's obsolete.

good to hear this, some times it is very hard to keep updated with these computer things.
my friend had a new asus a7v m/b, the book doesn't show any of those multiplier dip/sw. three weeks after, they updated the book on the internet.
so be happy with your new 800 computer.

Only if you want to lose the system and your money! If they've filed Bankruptcy (which if jonny says they have I believe they have) forget that idea! keep it, you have a fairly decent system which at least is upgradedable to a degree! I'd keep an eye out for any legal issues though that may affect your warranty. Sometimes warranties are taken over by other companies in hopes to attain those abandoned customers! I wouldn't count on it.....but maybe!

Call them to find out but IMHO, you got the system, it works, you don't know what will happen as far as a bnkrptcy. settlement (i.e. warranty assumption) I don't think they will have much recourse. BTW....called the guy I know that bought one and got his buddies to do the same.......you think you're mad!!!!!!!!

Here's what you do:

Keep the machine.

DO NOT SEND IT BACK.

This happened to me with a satelite dish. I sent it back because the dish didn't meet code. The company filed bankruptcy and my card was charged regardless. I got stuck with a $2000 charge that I chose not to pay. Screwed with my credit for a while.

DO NOT SEND IT BACK.

If they ever charge your card, DO call the credit card company. Explain the situation. Tell them that you bought the system with SUPPORT as part of the decision making process and thus, factored this into the expense of the machine (which is true because, quite simply, you can build that machine for less than what it cost you). They "may" hold the charge up in the air until they get a hold of someone at Quantex that can explain the situation and what they can do for you. If they do not hear from them, they may never charge the credit card.

A similar thing happened to me with a windshield. I went to the junkyard for a windshield, pulled it and gave the credit card to the guy at the counter. He charged me double for the windshield and handed me the card back. I asked him why the windshield was $80 instead of $40 and he said it was because I didn't prepay and that all windshields should be prepaid. I told him I didn't want it for $80 and he told me that if I didn't take it, he'd only credit back 50% as a restocking fee.

I took the windshield and called the credit card company. I explained the situation exactly as above and they said that they would contact the junkyard.

The junkyard never acted on the claim, so I got the windshield for free. :)
