Am I getting screwed?

I sold a PS3 on ebay. It was more of a resell because I bought a PS3 on ebay really cheap and then resold it for about a 40 some dollar profit.

Basically 7 days after the auction ended the winner of the auction messages me and tell me that the PS3 stops reading discs after 15 min or so. When I got the PS3 I turned it on and tested it and everything was working fine. He says he wants to go half (40 dollars) to replace the lens inside the PS3.

When I shipped the thing I wrapped it in a TON of bubble wrap and he suggested that it may have gotten damaged in shipping, I found that to be extremely hard to believe because I took every precaution that it would not be.

I dunno what to do. To me it seems like the guy is trying to make his purchase 40 dollars cheaper.

He has 100 percent feedback but he wont even leave me feedback until this is resolved.

Any thoughts? He said he didn't want to be hassled with shipping it back to me but I feel like I should just charge him cost of shipping so this whole transaction process actually costs him money instead of me money, then I can resell the PS3.

Thats what I was thinking, I mean if he is lying he's not gonna wanna return it and have to pay for shipping. Also do I refund him what he paid me or what I received in paypal? (Meaning to I have to pay the paypal fee that was taken out of the transaction)

The fees are something that you two would have to decide on. 🙁

Well on the auction it says that he has to pay the cost of shipping but I'm not paying back the paypal fee or atleast untill I get the system back and see what he really means.

did you sell it as is or with a certain guarantee?

As is: he is fucked, dont waste your time

depending on guarantee;

2-30 days- gotta help

just working condition at first turn on- he is fucked, unless you made it specific a complete working order.

or if its covered under ps3 warranty, let him deal with sony

I can't wait to see people bitch about your capitalistic ways.

He's on his own. He bought a used sensitive electronic device.
You take on a certain amount of risk when you purchase second hand electronics.

if u make him give evidence that he replaced the lense (receipt or whatever), maybe then you can be sure you're not being screwed.
from your OP it didnt sound like you thoroughly tested it at all, so there may be merit to his claim

I'd say the best thing to tell him it's not your fault since you packaged it properly and if your auction stated it was as-is note that too. If he's still complaining then you could just tell him to deal with Sony's warranty assuming, that it's still under warranty. Worst case scenario is that he'll open up the dispute and if that happens he'll probably end up having to ship the item back to you on his dime and then you refund him the full price that he paid including shipping.

also, keep in mind that if he paid with paypal, theres a chance you will lose ALL the money if he files a claim

Ebay says:
Return policy details:
The buyer has 7 days to return the item (the buyer pays shipping fees). The item will be refunded.
Have him return it for a refund.

Only $40 profit? Not worth the hassle of reselling on ebay for just $40.

CL maybe.

So do you think I should just pay him the 40 dollars that he requested? I mean that 40 dollars wouldn't be protected either, say he pulls another stunt and say that the new lens doesn't work and he wants to return it, now I've lost more money.

Take his history into account, that's what it's for. If he has tons of positive feedback its very likely he's been truthful and I would offer a refund. Did you test the device for more than 15 mins?

7 days after the buyer receives it Money Back The buyer has 7 days to return the item (the buyer pays shipping fees). The item will be refunded.

It says that right in your auction. Go with those terms because thats what ebay/paypal will hold you too.

Why would it stop working after 15 minutes?

Get him to return it for a refund. Also don't take any crap, since it has to be returned within 7 days and it is already day 7.

Yeah I thought about that too but I think it means at the moment the customer receives the package, not when the auction ends. They received the package 6/17/09.

If you choose to refund, go into the transaction history on paypal and find the refund link. This will refund all of the fees. Don't just send him a payment with the amount.

I think you can even do a partial refund, if you decide to send him the $40.

Obviously I'm not recommending any particular course of action, just giving advice on how to do it right.

A lens doesn't quit after fuckin 15 minutes, he's full of shit. If the lens didn't work, it wouldn't work in the first place. The problem is on his end. It's probably in some enclosed area heating up.
