Am I getting screwed by Amazon?

I got a $200 promotional code in April that had an expiration date of July 16. I called on July 15 (talked to Abra) and asked whether, since i lived in California, that the code would actually expire, since I had heard that gift certificates did not expire in California. I was told that it wouldn't and they'd forward it to their gift certificate department and take care of it.

Well, i tried using it today, and it said it expired. So i called them up and talked to Craig (he told me they can't give out last names), and he said the no-expiration-date policy doesn't apply to promotional certificates, only gift certificates. His take on it was that since i was sent an expiration date on the promotional certificate, it doesn't matter that i called the day before it actually expired or whether i called weeks before it expired, the point was that they sent me an expiration date, and so too bad for me (he was pretty rude about it)

He said Abra had sent a note to their marketing department (I guess their "gift certificate department") asking if it expired (not that it in fact didn't expire like she told me), and that the marketing department replied to her saying so.

He gave me his supervisor's name (John) and his team lead (Tina), telling me there was now a note on my account telling any other representative that they were not to discuss the issue with me since he considered it closed, and that my only contact about it would be with Tina, who will be emailing me in the next few days.

So my question is, am i totally off base here? I never even got a reply back from Abra or their marketing department that it expired.

What burns me is that Craig said that i was given an expiration date regardless so too bad. But after i talked to him, i found a gift certificate from them that was mailed to me that clearly states the expiration date as March 18, 2005. So that expiration date doesn't hold true, was there any reason I should've assumed the promotional one did?

Maybe I'm just bitching and moaning, but what do you guys think? If you think I should drop it, I will. Just want your opinion...

It really depends on what the actual law is in CA. Do some research. If you find out that the law says there's no expiration, then contact the CA AG. If there is an expiration after you do your research, then drop it.

ok, i'll look into it. I guess what bugs me the most is that the representative told me i would be taken care of and then i wasn't and there's no accountability. I didn't even know there was a difference between the gift/promotional certificates.

From what I know they are correct, the law only applies to GIFT certificates

If you can't get it resolved with Amazon, try contacting the consumer affairs desk at a local news station. In the SF Bay Area, ABC7 has taken care of hundreds of problems just like this one. Usually they'll just give a call to Amazon explaining who they are and maybe threaten bad press or something.

I think you'll have to find your own station in the Los Angeles area though.
