Am I getting ripped off on auto insurance?

This is freakin crazy expensive. I live in Washington DC and drive a 2001 Toyota Camry LE. I walk to work, so I drive my car only on the weekends for grocery shopping, occasional NYC trips, driving around town with friends, etc. My premium is $127 per month. I have a speeding ticket from June 2004 and I am 23 y.o. so I guess those factor in but its a little ridiculous. My premium in Buckfvck, VA was $78/mo so I guess they also factor in the fact that DC has one of the highest crime rates in the country. Hopefully in June 2007 my ticket will go off the record and that should help a little.

Anyone with similar age, car, location? Would be great to hear...

I pay 200 bucks a month, almost 1500 for every 6 months in other words.

college; 1 ticket, 1 accident at fault, 1 citation

rip off for me, hell yes.

will my parents cover, no. my dad clearly stated that I have to learn how to cover myself as an adult. I agreed with him and walked out the door with motives to increase determination to survive.

well now, with rent and school and trying to pay for DSL and a cell phone, what do we have here... broke as hell.

p.s. I have two jobs and hours of homework a day, but somehow I still manage to have a faster computer than even my college friends who call themselves PC gamers.

I'm like wtf, my friend is running world of warcraft on his integrated laptop graphics, ROFL

With nothing on my record (for now) in NC full coverage on my 97 Subaru Legacy runs about $75/month. Adding a 2006 GTO to that brings it to about $150. Both with $1M uninsured/underinsured driver coverage through State Farm.

EDIT 23yo

I pay like $350 every 6 mos for my '99 grand am. But I'm 32.

I'd just hit up progessive.com and geico.com and see what they give you. If it's inline with wha tyou pay now then you're probably not getting screwed too bad.

I remember the days of having really high rates--they sucked. At 25, the payments will drop down a decent amount, as long as you can keep your driving record clean.

Invest in a good radar detector for your drive to NYC. When you are driving long distances like that, it is worth it just as a reminder in case you start day dreaming and lose track of your speed.

That's true, but I got when I got a speeding ticket this past summer on the BQE (near the Verazano Bridge), they were using LIDAR guns, and from what I hear about those, even if your radar/lidar detector picks it up, they've already got your speed since they point them at individual cars.

I suggest some of you guys check out Liberty Mutual. I was paying 1600 on my 05 Legacy GT, and switched to LM and got a new rate of $750. Quite a significant savings if you ask me :p

Newish car? Its 5 years old.

Poor record? One ticket in 6 years is not that bad compared to the general population, right?

but you still have a ticket. i've never had a ticket. i've never caused an accident. i'm 25, and i'm female. however i drive a honda and live in LA. i'm also being killed on my insurance. and my car is from 1998!!

do you have full coverage? liability only? what are your coverage limits? what's your deductible? from there we can start to get an idea if you're getting ripped off.

I pay ~$130/month for a 2005 hyundai (financing, so full coverage); my record is/was clear as of september. This is with $500 deductibles; not sure of the limits on coverage off-hand, though.

2003 Chevy Impala

$131.36 - per month

I've always heard that once you turn 25 your rates will go down. I'm hoping that number gets cut by at least half. Maybe I'm dreaming. /shrug

Maybe your rates will go down, but if you're like most people the psychological factor will kick in and you'll instantly go out and buy a nicer car and, along with the annual increases that insurance companies like to stick to people, you will wind up paying the same.

Not likely. I just purchased the Impala this year. I love the car and have absolutely no reason to trade it in / get something different.

15-25% at most. Nowhere near half. When I turned 25 the drop was rather underwhelming. OP should try to get his car classified as "pleasure" use since he doesn't drive it to work.
