Am I doing something wrong?

Guys, I have (3) computers cracking RC5 blocks 24/7

1) P3 1GHz w/ 256MB
2) P3 500 w/ 128MB
3) Celeron 500 w/ 128MB

My team stats were 326 john@cox-internet.com 18-Jun-2000 13-Nov-2000 756 0.05 1,605 0.00

Why is it so low, or is that normal?

Well, based on your herd, i estimate that a a 24h period would yield about
900WU for the 1Ghz PIII, 450WU for the 500Mhz PIII, and another 450WU from the Celeron.

You should have 1800WU in a day. But don't forget that the computers probably have other stuff to sap CPU time too.

John:

According to the speed calculator you should get 1802 blocks/day with that herd! I've just checked your stats, and you have about 750 blocks/day for the last couple of stats runs. Since your computers are all 24/7, something must be stealing your CPU cycles... You don't have any kind of OpenGL screensavers going or anything do you? I've found them to be BIG hogs of CPU power... Also check for powersaving... All you really need is to turn off the monitor!

Hope this helps some!

With love and respect your fellow TA member

jinsonxu's right,

You should be hitting at best 1800 WU per day with then running 24/7 and nothing else going on. Even with use, unless we're talking images rendering or something else suitably CPU intensive, you should still be able to manage 1500. I don't think that's too wild an estimation.

Are you cracking just RC5 or maybe OGR as well?
What does your dnetc.ini file look like?
At least the priority line. Mine is:

[misc]
project-priority=RC5,OGR=0,DES=0,CSC=0

I've got 2 celeron II 950's and my stats vary widely on a day-to-day basis, anywhere from 1400-1700 is probably normal so your 1605 looks about right for 2 Ghz. Give it a few days and you'll get a better idea of your average.

Hi guys, I appreciate your replies. I have heavy duty OpenGL screensavers that run for the most part...looks like I will disable them 🙁

My .ini file reads:

[parameters]
id=john@cox-internet.com

[misc]
project-priority=RC5,OGR=0,DES=0,CSC=0

[rc5]
randomprefix=233

Is there anything else I can do?

Consider raising the fetch work unit threshold.

eg. Mine:

[rc5]
fetch-workunit-threshold=1600
preferred-blocksize=33
randomprefix=224

Could also consider flushing to one of TA's proxies too. It'll let you check your stats more often.

Add these lines

[networking]
autofindkeyserver=no
keyserver=jinsonxu.teamanandtech.com
dialup-watcher=active

jinsonxu, my .inf now reads:

[parameters]
id=john@cox-internet.com

[misc]
project-priority=RC5,OGR=0,DES=0,CSC=0

[rc5]
fetch-workunit-threshold=1600
preferred-blocksize=33
randomprefix=227

[networking]
autofindkeyserver=no
keyserver=jinsonxu.teamanandtech.com
dialup-watcher=active

Should this help me out?

John,

At that fetch unit level (1600) your PC won't dump every day. jinsonxu listed 900WU for the 1Ghz PIII, 450WU for the 500Mhz PIII, and another 450WU from the Celeron. If you want to see stats from your PCs everyday you will have to manually update them at a fetch-workunit-threshold=1600. There are other settings you can add to change that or you can set your fetch-workunit-threshold= to a level closer to the WUs listed for your CPUs.

Generally folks cache more WUs than they need just in case a keyserver they are using goes down (it gives them time to make changes or get past the server outage). I set the buffer level checking to always keep my work flushed. This works well if you have a full time connection to the Internet. Under configure, option 2, option 10 (may vary depending on other settings) 10) Buffer-level check interval ==> there is a discription of what it does. If you are using a dial up connection there is another popular ini setting to use. If you use this remember it will flush every time it finishes a packet of work units. It will also fetch everytime if you make that selection (selection 3 I think). You will want to mess around with it a bit and see what works good for you.

John,

Looks good from over here. Good to see you're running RC5!!

First of all, first person shooters really steals those CPU cycles, so that will cut your score quite a bit. I do it all the time - no big deal. If you play Quake3, UT, CS or anything else like that it will bring down your keyrate, only when you're playing the game. It will only effect the keyrate of the cruncher you were working on during that period.

Same goes for OGL screen savers.. I had one called Maya Paint Effects, it brought my stats down terribly. Another very imporant thing to check is that your system isn't going off into standby mode. (Power Management CP -> Always on.. select your monitor to go off if you want...)

The best thing to do is to exit out of all applications in your system tray before you go to bed, but it isn't necessary by any means. I just leave the cow down there and that's it. 🙂 I prefer the "I'll launch it if I want to, don't do it for me" mentallity.

Lates, bro.

One other thing to remember with UT in particular. Reboot your machine after playing. My wife frequently plays, and doesn't reboot. I notice stats are down, go check her machine, and it's doing about 600Kkeys rather than the 2.47Mkeys that it should be. 🙂
