Am i crazy or stupid? (planning on getting WAY into car audio)

i always have my hobbies, first it was paintball, then it was R/C cars, and now i believe its gunna be car audio.

i have a system in my car right now, but i plan on getting some more.

current system is 1 elemental designs 12.14k (svc) on an avionixx 400.2 amp
that is 400 watts, in a poted box tuned to 26hz.

my new getting into it so i can compete, and have all kinds of stuff to do would be.

4 elemental designs 12.14k on a Tsunami DB1100T (1100 watts at 1 ohm)
all in ported boxes, with 2 ports, 1 port tuned to 50hz for comps. and teh other tuned to around 30hz for daily driving (so i dont kill myself while driving)

or.

4 Elemental designs 12.44K (dvc) on 2 tsunami DB1100T
w/ same box setup as before

i believe i will end up goin with the first setup cuz i already have one sub anyways, but if i buy 4 subs, and then buy a 5th to sell , at 5 i get a discount. but the second setup will end up costing me about 300$ more, so id figure around 1100$ stead of 8-900$.

hobbies are exspensive, and to get this, i will probably be selling my HPI NMT that is pretty upgraded, just have to fix it minorly before it sells so i dont juip the guy who buys it, if interested PM me, and i might be able to get pics up. its in good condition, but the chasis is scrated, has an OS .15 CV-x ti turnbuckles, HD steering servo, slipper clutch, few spur gears, racing clutch, standard remote, standard steering servo is here somewhere, MANY MANY spare parts, Ti front shock tower, new shocks all around, 2 clutch bells, its pretty loaded, just pm me if interested.

but so am i crazy, stupid, "hey its a hobby", which one am i?

MIKE

o yea, i wont be a retard who listens to it when its ported for SPL w/o any sort of ear protection. prolly use ear plugs & ear covers, shouldnt be to loud then.just gotta be careful bout my windows 😕

and NO this is not because im still messed up from when i got my 3rd molars pulled today, i have been thinking bout it for a few days now

Yeah, instead of spending $500 for a stereo that you can listen to and enjoy, spend $1000 on one that you need earplugs to listen to and sounds worse than the first one, because even though it's loud, you're wearing earplugs. Sounds like a great idea.

I'm not sure why you want a system that will force you to wear earplugs. It's sort of like buying a car so you can take the bus.

Uhhhh..... exactly what organization and which class do you think you would be competing in with 4 subs and 2 amps? What car do you have? Do you know anything about competing???

You do realize will get your ass handed to you if you even think about Super Street A...

Your future hobby will be high tech hearing aids..I'am shure you'll be able to tell us all about them...

im prolly goin iasci rookie class. i cant find any usaci or slap competitions around here.

and now i wont be having to wear earplugs when im DRIVING the car. that is the point of the different ports. if i have two ports, one i can tune so its bout 20db less than the other port, thus being at like 130db, and 150 depending upon the port i have open.

Check into Resonant Engineering subs. I've heard good things about them, although I can't seem to find their website 🙁

Is resonant engineering still around? I haven't been following car audio in awhile, but RE used to be big when blueprint drivers was around as well. Blueprint went under, not sure about RE though.

yea RE's around still, they make ONE MASSIVE 15" xxx sub is what its called.

however its gunna b cheapest for me to get 3 more subs of what i already have then to get all new everything. plus i know this sub well, and the dudes there and cool and will talk to u bout ne thing.

OK since you are asking an opinion I will give you mine. People tend to spend a lot of time in their cars, so having a nice audio system in your car is something that I see as a good investment. However, there is an extreme difference between having a nice system and going overboard. Now, if car audio is your die hard hobby, go for it. There is no such thing as over pursuing what you like.

However, from a sound perspective, cars are a TERRIBLE place to replicate audio. You have outside noise, cramped conditions, a limited availible power supply, dozens of different materials to deal with, not to mention having a loud system tends to piss off other motorists, and makes your car a huge target for theft and vandalism. If you instead take that money and invest it in a home audio system. I think that you will found you have better sound replication, and you can get more for your money. So my vote is(and what I personally do myself) is to make your car system enjoyable, but put the real bucks and time into a killer home setup.

Having too much bass sounds like AS$ in a car. I listen to someone's setup (two 12" subs) plus some tweeters and whatnot, and the extra bass just sounded dumb. It was like "thump thump" to the beat of "In da Club" by Fiddy. Why not just listen to music normally and not waste your money?

i know it makes my car a target. however when i install this, i plan on making a false floor so that when i park it covers the subs and amp so as to not allow them to be seen. my headunit flips over already. and i know they are horrible places for sound reporduction, but it shouldnt be bad. i am installing 120sq. ft. of sound deadening within my car. and it probably will become a die hard hobby for me. i used to be into R/C cars, but i dont have any good tracks around me. and i dont mind driving somewhere to compete in a competition, but R/C cars break literally every time you drive them, or have some sort of problem.

as to having to much bass, there are 2 types of bass (well not really 2 types but yea) there arer the subwoofers that just put out boom, and there are ones that will reproduce a kick drum very well. the subs i am gettin reproduce kick drums VERY well, as i know from my single sub already.

and i aint no crazy bastard who listens to his system at 140 db when idlin at a stop light, thats just mean, and annoying. i dont like being a jackass, that isnt me. i just hope to be able to hit 140 daily driving, and around mid 150's to 160 at competitions. never will i actually listen to my car at 140 while daily driving thats loud, and will drown out my normal speakers.

my friend has 2 12"s and they have HORRIBLE sound quality, he is runnin 1200 watts, but they are just boom, no actual quality to them. plus my subs look sweet, they are flat, not coned.

You Realize 130 decibels is a jet taking off, and 140 is way over the threshold of pain? I would really strive for the best sound replication over pure loudness. Thunder is 110 decibels, I think most concerts are 120 or so. How old are you BTW?

i myself am 17. 130 is the threshold of pain, 140 is miltary jet, 160 is instant perforation.

RE's website. Their website is broken.....but they have a contact info if you want to call then and order a sub. My friend just put a 15" XXX on a 81000D in a 6 cubic foot box!:Q That thing rumbles, gets low, and is prett musical. Awesome sub😀

140db+ (on a new Termpro meter) or 148db is what I would define a a loud car - and there aren't even all that many driving around at those levels. Loudest car I have been in is somewhere in the low 150's... and it is unreal how loud that is... it is way louder than any concert I have ever been too.

You don't get it do you???? Going from a sealed to a ported box only yeilds you 3 db (which technically twice as loud). So apparently, because you are a complete car audio genius, you will change the port size on your box and make it at 6x louder. Uhh... right.

If you still don't get what I am saying, you are a complete idiot and you need to learn the BASICS of car audio before you blow all of your money.

i get what your saying, i prolly exagerated by quite a lot there lol, i know i didnt mean 20db, ive been out of it this weekend (vicodin + wisdom teeth gone)

i prolly can reduce about 5 db if i make it sealed or unsealed.

3DB is not twice as loud to the human ear, it is twice as loud in terms of SPL, while 10db is twice as loud to the human ear.

Well regardless, you will not, by ANY means be able to switch a box and be able to get more than 5db change unless you did something horribly wrong on the first box.

I try to be pretty open-minded but I think a car audio competition is fvcking stupid. Gee look at the big speakers and amps I bought and put in my car, woo.

Your example doesn't make any sense - wouldn't that apply to ANY competition? Wow, you can buy a lot of engine parts to make it fast, woo. Wow, you lift a lot of weights and have muscle, woo.

Car audio isn't that simple. In the good organizations, there are very strict limits on what you can do. For example for Street A, car must be off, no electrical upgrades, you can have 1 15" or 2 12"s or 2 10"s or 2 8"s.

You have to know your car inside and out before you can actually score well. A guy in Columbus has the loudest Street A trunk car in the world - 154db with 2 12"s. Just to see how he has managed to get every db out of his car is pretty cool.
