Am I crazy for applying to the top 50 consulting firms?

Well I am a recent college graduate and I am really not sure where to start my job hunting, but a old roommate has suggested that I apply at the Top 50 Consulting firms in the country. I got the list from Vault.com and pretty much saved all the links to their application pages.

I graduated with a Bachelors in Political Science from University of Illinois-Chicago and it is hitting me now how silly this whole thing sounds. I mean my friend is the eternal optimistic and he currently works for Accenture so he is working hard to get me an interview there.

I really like technology and problem solving but if that were the requirements to be a Consultant everyone on ATOT would also. So I am pretty much drifting now since I am out of school and feel helpless with a BA in Poli Sci but do I even have a 1% chance at ANY of these firms?

As long as you're smart, you have a chance... these consulting firms don't really care what degree you have, cuz they don't JUST do technology consulting... Trust me, I'm working at one right now too

If you are smart and have a good to great GPA you may have a pretty decent chance.

The thing that is going to hurt you is your poli sci major (weak) and you lack of real business experience (I asume).

They like people who can work with numbers and who have real experience. I suggest you be prepared to prove that you can do that, or you will have a hard time getting hired.

Don't underestimate yourself. I look at my oldest brother, BA PolSci, and he's now a top VP of a large banking/investment firm. Hard work from a couple of years experience paid off for him.

I say, play the numbers game; one of these consulting firms may just give you a chance....and that's all you need for a start.

definitely. consulting companies hire from all majors and your major is a favorable one, after business degrees of course. politics is 90% of doing business and even though what they taught you in college is not exactly politics in business, it will come handy. 2 things that will help you: above average GPA, good internships + parttime jobs.

OMG, you crazy boy. Applying to the Top 50 firms. WTF cares. Just do it. Geez. This is not a very difficult dilemna. What do you have to lose? You ARE unemployed aren't you? God forbid you get a job.

I just read several of the bios of different firms and they talk about how they recruit from the best of the best universities in the country and whatnot along with MBA students. I guess that threw me off a little. I have to say I am very surprised by all the comments in here because I assumed most of you would laugh at the idea.
