Stuck in the snow for 3 hrs, the car just didn't have the clearance (useless 4dr sedan!) to go anywhere. The guy drove his Yukon, pulled me and got me back on the road, and said cooly "how much is that worth to you?" I reached to my pocket and gave him $40 and plenty of thanks. I dunno, I could have easily gave him $100 given the fact that he literally saved my ass tonight.

$40 is not much but it's all I had at that time. Is that cheap? I really cannot thank the guy enough though.

This is ATOT. Everyone here tips $200 for the worst service in the world and even for take-out so yes you didn't give him enough.

I actually think it was kind of bogus that the guy first decides to be Good Samaritan, then implies you should pay him.

You would have been to cheap to even offer anything b/c he probably makes minimum wage and that's enough.

i agree with the poster above.. pretty crappy for the guy helping out to say something like that.. it shoulda went down with him helping you, you thanking him and handing him40 and him saying no problem thanks goodbye.

$40 is pretty good for something that didn't take him that long. Personally though I think it's a bit of a jerk thing to do asking for money for something like that, especially without mentioning it up front.

The guy was cool, and in my view, deserved every penny of it. I wasn't going to get out of there without his help. If I didn't give him anything, he probably would have been fine as well.

Yeah, I wouldn't have said anything nor taken any money for helping out. $40 was generous of you.

You shouldn't have given him anything. The guy's a dick. Probably going around looking for stranded suckers and shaking then down for cash. No decent human being demands payment in that situation.

Well since he took payment if anything was damaged as a result, even if you don't notice it now, you can sue him.

This. Seriously, who helps people out and asks for money? What a douche.

Huh, surprised he asked for money.

Would have been okay to take if you offered but that way is kind of dinky.

If that was truly the case, he wouldn't have asked. Seriously, it really is a dick move on his part in my opinion.

Yeah, his wife did mention that they have been going around pulling people out.

To be fair, he didn't exactly ask for payment. I think a handshake and an expression of gratitude will do for him.

I just happened to have some cash with me.

QFT. if you cant afford to tip at least 100 for a tow, dont drive in the snow imo

Well, it sounds like he was hoping to make some extra cash by helping people. A little more tactful than asking for payment beforehand like a tow truck driver.

That man is an entrepreneur. But I don't think we can say if you were cheap or not since we don't know what it would have cost you to have a tow truck come get you. I'd think $40 more than covered his expenses though.

I run around every snow pulling people out of ditches with my truck. Never ask for anything, sometimes leave them with a card if I think they might run the risk of getting in trouble again (or if they're a hot girl). The wife finds it hilarious but she often comes out with me to take pictures for giggles.

I think this winter I probably helped, towed, de-ditched, and un-stuck a total of about 25 people and only two of them even asked me what I owed them to do it, both of which I simply grinned and replied, "Nothing, just drive safe".

About five times when I was helping someone, someone else drove up and basically asked what they would pay to get out - when I was already helping the person even! So I'd imagine there are a LOT of people who drive around specifically to try and get money for pulling people out. Dunno if I would say that is a BAD thing, per say.. because a tow truck driver is going to charge them $80-150 if they have to call someone, but it's just not my style.

Maybe, if he made it clear he was charging you before he pulled you out. Pulling you out and then asking for money isn't cool.

Yea, that's lame. I've pulled people out a few times, and I don't ask, or expect anything in return. If someone insists on giving me money I'd take it, but I'd prefer they didn't.
