Am I Being too Cautious--Ipad 3 CL Purchase..

sorry if this isn't the right place, but i could use some advice.

i'm a very experienced buyer/seller online and am looking for an ipad 3. there are literally hundreds for sale on cl in the bay area where i live. the one i'm tempted by is a 64gb 4lte version, new in sealed box. the seller (i have his phone number) says it was a gift and he does not have the gift receipt--that is giving me caution. he did give me the serial number which i checked online and it is registered for apple care and is a new ipad 4lte...he also says i can open it up (and i guess turn it on) when we meet (at a public open place).

anyway, i was all set to do the deal but am hesitant because there is no proof of purchase even though everything else seems to check out.

oh, the price is $800 which is about $100 less than buying from the store. there was at least one more offered at the price locally but that sold today.

am i crazy for being hesitant, and if i open it up is there any definitive way to make sure it is indeed an authentic ipad 3? thanks!

MOD EDIT: This is not a hot deal. - Zap

Make sure you meet in a safe place like behind a gas station or liquor store.

Let us know whats really in the box, should be funny, maybe get it on video.

I guess maybe times are tough (though they cant be that tough if you are paying $800 on a luxury good), but I have never thought "Oh, let me look to CL to buy a brand new item, at a discount." It seems like a totally strange idea to me. A used iPhone? Sure. A used iPad ? Sure. But a product that came out a week ago?

well if i can feel comfortable that it is as advertised why not? cl has new and used stuff (and a lot of scams) all the time. there are literally hundreds of the new ipads for sale with receipts by flippers looking to make a quick buck, but the market hasn't cooperated and there doesn't seem to be any bid above what it costs at the store. my gut is telling me that odds are this one is just as the seller says, i just wish he had the gift receipt which is giving me pause. some people would prefer cash to a credit at the apple store...

but i haven't gotten it, am torn on whether to bother.

Ironic you'd sacrifice the experience of having a few dozen blue shirts clapping for you after purchase in trade for $100 off and no proof of purchase on a easily breakable item.

Can't say I blame you 😉

i didn't get it did i? the consensus clearly is to pass which is what i've done...i guess i made the right choice!

I went to my local BB in NH, all the way across the USA. I just wanted to see this beast in person, because to me the screen of the IPad/ Ipad2 is so good it's hard to imagine what's 2X as good. I've read about 25 books in 7 months with mine, and LOVE it.
Anyways, the local Salem,NH BB has none on display, LOL. They had 64gb models in stock, but the display stand is handled by Apple, so BB does not have to pay or use from their inventory for display models. Needless to say, the whole reason for this post was to write about my dismay that I can't even see one in person yet at my local electronics buying store. That is RIDICULOUS !!!
