okay, i got win98 on one partition and winxp on another...

---------------------------------------------------
winxp was install first and i used partition magic 8.0 to create a new fat32 partition where i have successfully installed win98...

i can boot from either OS depending on which one i make active...

i was following these instructions to add win98 the this winxp setup...

Here is how to install win98/ME on a computer with winxp/2000 already installed on a NTFS partition.

First, format a partition with FAT32. (Use partition magic v7 or greater or
similar to create a partition if there is no space left.)
Make the partition active.

Copy win98/ME cab files to \windows\options\cabs on the new partition.
Boot computer with a win98 boot disk (Use winimage to create boot disks)
Install Win98/ME from directory.

Now, use your winXP/2000 CD and start installation under win98/ME.
When it prompts you to reboot, reboot back into win98/ME and not into
winXP/2000 setup.

Edit Boot.ini file on the Fat32 partition from:
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

To:
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=15
Default=C:\
[Operating Systems]
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional"
---------------------------------------------------

now the only problem i am having is i can't find boot.ini while in win98. i set winxp active again and found and entry there tho. the directions say to edit the boot.ini file on the fat32 partition but it is nowhere to be found. so my main question is what do i do from here to have the dual boot option when i start the system? thanx some more for the help guys.

i am trying to follow these instructions below and got to the part... Now, use your winxp/2000 CD and start installation under win98/me but when i tried to use the winxp disk it said 'THIS PROGRAM CAN'T BE USED IN DOS' ???

was i supposed to restart with only the xp disk / without the win98 bootdisk?

ok, forget teh above... can someone please tell me where do i start setup from to get a dual boot situation like described above? when i type...

cd windows=windows>
cd options = windows>options>
cd cabs = windows>options>cabs>

...with the windows xp cd it says this program can't be run in dos. when i run it with window 98 cd with same directory it says this directory already exsists and the files will be overwritten. so what am i doing wrong? also, partition magic has the ntfs partition on partition E and the windows98 partition on partition C which seems backwards from teh instructions.

what do i need to do from here... please, please someone help me this is not my machine.

if C is NTFS then you'll have problems as win98 will install some files on C regardless of which partition its put on.
win98 can't see or read data on a NTFS partition!

when i looked at the partition magic gui...

partition C is FAT32 - 40gb
partition E is NTFS - 30gb

...so the partitions are split in regards to file system its just that i thought when i created the new partition (fat32/win98) it would be E and the winxp/ntfs partition would remain C... thats how i read it anyway.

so with these being backwards will that screw this whole process up?

I imagine that you can make a linux boot disk with lilo on it .. or have someone make this for you .. that can boot your windows

windows98 is up and running so now how do i get the winxp and win98 to start up together?

do i set both partitions to active or just unhide winxp partition after editing boot.ini?

please help me someone.... a guy right above me asked a similar question and he can't respond fast enough... what up guys?

Have you checked your View options to make sure that you can see hidden files, and to show protected OS files?

The reason you're not getting responses is because you did this whole thing in such an difficult way. Every piece of multi-booting advice agrees that you should install Windows 98 first. You've found out why - it's much more complicated to do the install than it is to simply back up and start over correctly. And when you take the complicated route over the simple, can you blame people for not reading long posts?

i asked many people in a different thread before i started this and most seemed to think it wasn't a problem... xp has been installed for months now so i really didn't have a choice... but thanx for your help.
