I do feel ambivalent, because she seemed nice enough. But I see GP surgery as pretty much the ultimate sign of fatal laziness. If you can't manage to put the fucking fork down when faced with death by fat, I pretty much assume there are other major personality flaws just waiting to bubble to the surface. So while I feel like an asshole slightly, I figure down the road that dread laziness would resurface on her part and drive me away.

It's clear that you know nothing about the human body, you fucking tool.

Actually I know quite a bit, but please, enlighten me. Try to do so without running to pubmed.

My wife had gastric bypass (before I met her) and it ruined her ability to absorb certain vitamins and minerals from food; she'll have to have regular iron infusions for the rest of her life because her stomach can no longer absorb it from food. So I can see where you're coming from about the insanity of the procedure; that shit is crazy.

I wouldn't say you're a dick for not wanting to hang out with someone, but doing it based on your assumption of why they made a particular choice in the past without knowing all the facts does strike me as being... well, dickish, I guess. Did she tell you why she had the procedure done instead of losing weight naturally? What if the doctors said she had no choice, that she would die without it? You're forming a judgment based on your own stereotype of people who undergo gastric bypass, and that's definitely a dick move.

She did start to lose weight naturally, but I guess just...got bored of trying(?) for lack of a better term.

NOW you're a dick

For the people stating that there are other reasons for GP, so I must be a dick. Could you point me towards ANY statistic that indicates more than an incredibly small percent of the surgeries are done for non-self-inflicted obesity reasons?

Am I a dick for not wanting to hang out with someone who had Gastric bypass?

So . . . you're going for the gastric bypass bypass, eh?

Let's break this down. First, are you a dick? Not much info here, but I'm going to go with "yes." After all, you're posting a personal problem on ATOT and expecting a usable answer, so at the very least, you're socially retarded.

Now that your essential dickness has been firmly established, the further question is, "Are you being a dick for not wanting to hang out with this girl?"

Listen, DICK, I'm not going to bother answering that! Why should I care about any detail of your dick-stained life, dick? :colbert:

Well....I do like a good pun.

As someone that lost 150+ lbs *naturally* I can tell you this: You are a dick.

But is she headed back to gaining that weight in the near future? Probably. However, everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance.

Are you a dick for not wanting to hang out with a friend for this? Yes.

Are you a dick for not wanting any relationship? Definitely not. She is horribly not athletic, lacks self confidence, lacks her own motivation, and when doing operations such as that the resulting image is guaranteed to not be appealing [naturally, you can't simply remove fat from one place and naturally have it balance out].

Offtopic: What the hell is gastric bypass and how is it any different than mass liposuction? Is it something new?

Food addiction is a serious issue. In ways it's worse than a drug addiction because you can quit drugs and put yourself in an environment where you never see them again, thus helping reduce the chances of relapse.

Try doing that with food, you'll die.

Addiction is serious shit. Your brain is rewired and self control isn't enough to stop it. Gastric Bypass is used as a tool to help those cravings. It's difficult to overeat when you become ill trying.

it's a stomach re-routing surgery that makes the stomach tiny. Nothing to do with liposuction. Google may be your friend here.

Who cares what the statistics say? Smokers are far more likely to get lung cancer; does that mean I should assume everyone I meet who has lung cancer was some uncontrollable addict? Statistics are well and good for figuring out general trends, but you actually know this person, and rather than ask her why she had surgery, you use statistics to validate your prejudice. That seems pretty low. We can't speak to her reasons for having surgery any more than you can; you're the one who's making the judgment that she's lazy because of it.

GP doesn't magically repeal the laws of physics. You still have to lose weight through eating less and/or exercising more.

Was this person funny? Was this person interesting? Was this person intelligent? Was this person kind?

These are the criteria by which I judge whether or not to hang out with people.

People who undergo gastric bypass can barely eat anything without getting violently ill. That's how they lose weight initially. After their body compensates, most of them gain that weight back. I've known a few people who did it, I can't say I think too highly of them.

She seemed pretty decent otherwise. I'm actually somewhat surprised by the visceral (pause) response that I got here. Considering an overwhelming majority of them are due to the "patient" having no willpower, it's fairly safe to assume this person does not either, and that these traits would come out eventually. As for the people saying food addiction is serious, yes, it is. It takes willpower to stop it, just like any other addiction. And a desire to actually change your life for the positive and no longer be a slovenly shit.

Food addiction is another sign that America is fucked. Maybe if you lose the self control to keep your body healthy, then you should let nature take over and die.

It does make me cringe, too, I'll admit. I've always been a little overweight, but never fat. Even if I were, there is no way in hell I would have surgery like that to correct the issue. None, zilch, makes me sick just thinking about it.

As to the question, it depends on what you mean by "hang out." If you mean "date," then you have a right to be selective, as long as you handle things politely. If it really is just hanging out... well you still have a right to be selective, but that would probably not be enough to get me to shun someone.

The reason why she had the surgery isn't the problem the OP has. She most likely had it because her health was in such a state actually losing weight naturally was not enough, in enough time. However, the OP can easily judge her on how and why she GAINED that much weight. It wasn't just some chance she accidentally picked up an extra 1000 calories a day for 20 years. There is very little excuse for an adult to be obese to the point a GP is even considered. A medical issue or "I was in a coma for a year and my feeding tube was pumping me three time what it should have been" are pretty much it.

People can, apparently, be addicted to anything. If it was not food, I imagine it would be something else. I don't really get it, but it seems to be the case.

Yes, considering how we point and laugh around here...too fat, too thin, too pale, too Darwin...
