Look for a GMC/Chevy Tahoe. They get a little better gas milage.

Also how often would you use it? Would it be cheaper to just rent a large SUV/Van when needed then have to buy one and insure, maintain, and gas it???

That's a good alternative. There are downsides to renting (have to plan in advance, rental place may not have cars available, may have to go out of your way to get to the rental place, etc), but those tradeoffs may be worth saving money, it all depends on the individual's estimation of value.

I do have to agree with you on this. Unless they're going to use the truck a lot, they can save a lot of money by just renting a 4WD truck when they want to go skiing.

This is the freedom you get when you pick an SUV to own. Just pack and go. Need something at Home Depot? Just get in and go. 2 dogs, 2 kids, and 2 parents need to get somewhere - get in and go. All the same car. If you're a skiier there's no reason you should want to go find & rent a 4wd to go do it that many times a season. I don't see a better reason to get an all-practical vehicle than this. Perfect example.

It comes down to calculating the cost difference in fuel and see if it's worth it to you. Everybody's got different views on value.

There's no reason to rent or own a 4wd if you're a skier either. I grew up skiing, along with other winter sports, and never owned a 4wd vehicle in my entire life.

You don't get the point. You can obviously get up snowy roads in any AWD, some FWD, etc. but do they have the same ability to carry 6 and make Home Depot trips to carry back some fencing? SUVs = practicality. 1 vehicle, many uses. You think every single person out there who owns one is doing it to be trendy? Answer that honestly.

And again you lie about owning a 4WD since AWD is the same thing for this discussion. What's the point in saying that if you have actually owned an AWD, in your entire life? It's not helping your credibility much.

Not anymore. Thank high gas prices for that. ;)

You stated that if you're a skier that you practically need a 4wd SUV. I think that's a load of horse shit.

I keep forgetting that the Subaru I owned (in SoCal) was AWD. I'm originally from upstate New York and when I lived there and drove through many many winters that I never owned a 4wd vehicle.

No, I was saying it was a perfect reason to have one... in addition to the 2 dogs they have and possible family to be started somewhere down the road. I didn't say need. You don't need anything - you can always compensate - but the whole point... why would you when the simple solution is right there?

thanks for backing me up.

Anyway, i went ahead and bought one a couple weeks ago and this thing is awesome. It needed a tune up but now it runs like butter. i'm amazed at how quiet and smooth the 5.4 liter is(although not at the 13 mpg i have been averaging) The sound system is sweet too. although i have to swap out the piece of crap vcr in the back. I'm hoping i can swap it for a dvd player without too much trouble. I definitely recomed one of these things for anyone who is going to only put 5-10K miles on a vehicle a year and needs something roomy. Just make sure you have a commuter car as well.
