I banged my leg really hard the other day. I suffered from some minor internal bleeding, I assume from severing a (artery? vein?). I know that this is a flesh wound and will heal fine but what happens if you just sever that vein/artery? Will it regrow? Will you just have to adapt to less bloodflow?

If you're still alive and can walk, you didn't sever an artery or vein. Bruising is minor. Capillaries will regrow and stuff.

You most likely tore a vein. Depending on the severity, it will either heal or the load will be taken up by the surrounding veins. Arteries tend to be a little deeper but, the same applies. If there's enough damage to the veins, fluids tend to pool in that extremity. That can be a bad thing but, it's unlikely a minor accident caused that kind of damage.

My leg is swollen and the immediate area underneath it is now purple. Does that mean vein torn?

By heal, do you mean it can regrow another path? This is the second time I banged up my same leg in almost the same area. I'm still short a vein from the last time.

Capillaries can regrow, veins do not. However, veins are stretchable as well as flexible. Other veins can pick up the load. You would have to damage a major vein or valve in a vein to cause long lasting problems. If you're really concerned, go see a podiatrist. Banged up from falling isn't going to do it. If it's from a car accident, go see the doctor.

Keep an eye on it, or have a doc check it out.

I remember reading about this a few days ago. They are surmising he had a blot clot in his ankle.

I think it is still a bruise since there's no weird lumpiness fortunately.

Is your leg any different from before other than texture?

Thanks for the help m8.

I have to wear a support stocking because fluid tends to pool in my leg. By itself it isn't painful but, it's easy to develop ulcerations if I don't wear it. It doesn't help that I stand and walk all day long.

I banged your mom really hard the other day. She saw my blue vein.

Not funny, not appropriate, not again.
