Destiny requires online connection, even in single-player

Bungie's upcoming Destiny will feature a highly crafted narrative experience, one that you can experience as a traditional "campaign." However, even if you're playing the game single-player, you will need an online connection. "To play Destiny, you need to be connected," Bungie's Pete Parsons succinctly noted.

The online requirement will undoubtedly be a barrier of entry for those who don't have their consoles connected online, and crucially, for non-Gold members on Xbox 360. However, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg says that the game needs to be online because "that's the only way to realize the vision of the game. The vision of the game is a shared world first person shooter. In order to make the world shared, you need to be connected."

Although the game will require an always-on connection, Bungie promises that solo players will have a complete experience. "We want to be able to give you that strong narrative, you as a solo player. We want you to have that. If you want to do it by yourself, that's totally okay," Parsons said.

You will still see other players in your game, but you can choose not to interact with them. A key difference between Destiny and most MMOs is the scale, which allows you to take the lone wolf approach. "It's not about stuffing as many people into a space as possible," Parsons pointed out. "The amount of players you see is design-controlled." Destiny's unique approach to online connectivity is why we compared the game to Journey--among many other eclectic games.

Is this the future of console gaming or are they jumping the gun a bit? From what I understand a large portion of Xbox 360 owners still don't have reliable internet, limited internet, or no access at all. Maybe this is an experiment to see if always online DRM is profitable on the console side and to determine if it should be standard on the next gen Xbox.. What are your thoughts?

Yet one more reason to just skip it. If I wanted something to always be connected to the internet, thats what I have a PC for....it just shows how out of touch corporations are.

I don't mind it, since I'm always online anyways.
If I have interest in playing the game, the little hook wouldn't bother me much. The necessity for it better do something REALLY cool though, always online for the sake of authentication and nothing else is horseshit. But if you end up fighting alongside hundreds of other people and their single player games can affect your story in some way that would be pretty awesome.

This game is basically an MMO just fps style so of course it's going to need internet to play. Shouldn't be a shocker to anyone. No story here.

It is the future of gaming. I know people complain but really there are basically no people playing games on a console who lack an internet connection anyway, and I'm not at all interested in rare examples to the contrary. People complain about this far too excessively. If you don't have an internet connection you have much bigger problems in your life than this kind of thing.

Yeah, right. And how bout those living in the sticks with only satellite or dial up for internet. Don't think even authentication will work so hot on dial up, or with a 2000ms+ latency let alone multi-player gaming. Don't think I want to take my console into a Starbucks if I want gaming, thank you very much. :p

Well that's just a lie..because I don't play any of my consoles online....I take them travelling with me, when I dont have internet...

that's the mindset you need to get over, that everyone does it like you....

title is extremely misleading.

this... because this:

This game is basically an MMO just fps style so of course it's going to need internet to play. Shouldn't be a shocker to anyone. No story here.

Also, who cares anymore? It's your choice as a consumer to pick which games to buy, and if an online requirement bothers you then you don't play it.

Sorry if the title was misleading, that wasn't my intention. Since they basically say you'll be able play the game as a complete single player adventure and won't miss anything, it sounds more like "always online" DRM to me than anything. Why not just have an offline single player option if that's the case? That's really the point I was trying to make here.

The title was developed as an MMO I'd assume. And the single player component was just an augmentation of this. If you don't have internet decent enough to be always online, don't buy this.

The game was designed so that your friends can seamlessly jump in your story and help a mission then go off their own way without interrupting your single player. It will be multiplayer able when you are simply playing alone. It's a cool concept actually if it works.
