Aluminum Ducted Alpha/P4 in a Lanboy Case

Well I finally got this project started. It's an aluminum duct made from a drier vent part, modified slightly to fit an Alpha heatsink. The fan in the photos has the mount tabs from one side removed. It then fits into the duct and is held tight by the clamp. The fan is mounted to the case normally with four screws...decoupled with a foam gasket.

This is the only mounting for the setup, as on the Alpha end it is a snug fit. I'm still experimenting with different fans....but for now the fan is blowing in at 2000rpm. It's a PCToys stealth fan from CompUSA and fairly quiet. I haven't tried the SilentTec utility(Aopen AX4GE MAX board), so the fan is blowing at a constant 2000rpms.

This setup really looks good in the aluminum Lanboy....The projection on the Lanboy side panel completely covers the mount, while leaving the aluminum part of the duct visible.

The temps are very good. P4 2.66 idles at 33c and I haven't been able to get it much over 37c. Running the SilentTec utility should be able to lower the fan speed quite a bit and still remain cool. We'll see...

Alpha Duct in Lanboy

Very slick! You mention the fan is blowing ONTO the heatsink? Have you thought about having the fan exhaust air from the heatsink? The 8045 is supposed to work better than way anyway.

Sweet Mod!

I hated my lanboy's heat/noise. I can tell you are working hard to cool/quiet the POS effectively.. I just bought a new case instead 🙂 Is that Pax Mate or something else you have applied?

I agree with Beatle that you might consider trying to switch the fan to exhaust the air out. You may really cook your other components with only the PSU to exhaust.

Great work with the duct though, it looks great!!

This is a work in progress.....The cpu will run cooler blowing ambient air on it, rather than pulling warmer in-case air through the Alpha and ducting it outside, Alpha's printed directions not-with-standing.

So far at about 24c ambient, the PSU has been able to handle the exhaust temps without any problems. I like the Lanboy, but it does need some tweaking to make it silent, and cool. That's CompUSA acoustic foam lining the case.

This duct setup will shortly be drawing in air through a good filter. Who wants a windowed case full of dust...heh.

I am guessing with the 2 intakes and the PSU as your exhaust, you are definitely running a positive case pressure setup. That will help with dust for sure. As long as you blow more air into your case than it exhausts, dust is much less of a problem.
